Winter coats, is it worth buying maternity one?

Just wondering if other mums and mum's to be have bothered with maternity coats. Baby due in January and I can just about fit into my normal winter coat but not for much longer. Should I look at getting a bump friendly one or just buy one a few sizes bigger to accommodate bump as it grows?

I was thinking about not bothering, due early Feb. Agree winter pregnancy is much more pricey! Ds was born in July, I had three maternity dresses for work and managed with leggings and stretchy tops otherwise.

This post is making me think.i need a coat now though.

I was due in Jan and bought a maternity one I hate the idea of walking about in clothes that don't fit. Remember it will be at least a few weeks before your tummy will shrink back I wore mine until the end of feb (ds was born 2nd Feb) until my normal coat fit comfortably again.

Does anyone know if the H&M parkas are waterproof? It doesn't say on the website description.

KP86 · 08/10/2016 22:16

I think this one is

m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0394001005.html

The £30 one may be as well.

Why not order both and return the one you don't like or is unsuitable?

charlybs · 09/10/2016 10:39

I've got the more expensive one - it's shower proof. It's not plasticy waterproof material

charlybs · 09/10/2016 10:40

If you want fully waterproof it'd be best to find a coat from an outdoors company rather than high street

malvinandhobbes · 09/10/2016 17:08

If you think you might use a sling, consider this: www.lovetobenatural.co.uk/mamalila-allweather-jacket-softshell.html

I love it with my 2 month old, and wish I'd bought it for pregnancy.

Bisquick · 10/10/2016 09:15

Next does a nice maternity coat that has a removable panel - so you can use the coat £58 including panel - while pregnant and baby wearing, and then remove panel for a nice fitted coat later.

icanteven · 10/10/2016 17:19

Definitely get one - it's completely worth it. I got a 2nd hand Isabella Oliver on Ebay and sold it on for the exact same price 4 months later.

middlings · 10/10/2016 17:26

I got one - and used it for the two winters afterwards when I was pushing the buggy about and then lent it on to two friends so it's had plenty of use.

I remember being out one evening in my normal coat when I was about 19 weeks and feeling very vulnerable as my bump got cold. I wanted to keep it warm and cosy.

HeadDreamer · 10/10/2016 17:29

I had one spring baby and I think if you can afford it, just buy one. There are some pretty cheap ones from high street shops. I bought loads from H&M.

HeadDreamer · 10/10/2016 17:31

But it isn't true it takes a few weeks to shrink back. Depends on what you are talking about! If it's skinny jeans ofc. But I was in normal wrap dresses and leggings when I leave hospital on both pregnancies. Don't expect you can still wear the same maternity stuff. The bump goes right back. But equally, if you buy nice enough looking things, they can be worn without bump as well. It depends on the design.

KP86 · 10/10/2016 17:34

HeadDreamer, I'd suggest that you're in the minority if you bounced back within a couple of days.

Most women take at least a month, usually more.

cosmicglittergirl · 10/10/2016 17:37

Yeah, took me weeks to shrink back...
I bought a JoJo parka off eBay. Looks fine as a regular coat too. I'm currently lending to a second pregnant friend, so I feel it was worth it.

FatimaLovesBread · 10/10/2016 17:38

I had an early April baby and bought one as I needed it for the cold dec-march in Yorkshire. I tried last year's H&m but the material was too stiff and made me look like I was wearing a tent. Ended up with one from New Look.

That's reminded me I need to look at listing it on eBay, thanks op

MrEBear · 10/10/2016 17:50

I have been eyeing up the Next one I really like the idea of being able to use it beyond pregnancy. Does anybody know how waterproof it is?

Last time round I survived with a borrowed jacket that I didn't really like, this time I would love a basic waterproof that actually fits. I have emailed Trespass to ask if they would consider adding a maternity jacket or zip in panel to their range, I'm guessing it would be too late for this year but it might help women in the future.

AButterflyLightsBesideUs · 10/10/2016 19:41

Well the H&M ones have arrived and I'm disappointed because the arms are too short on me. I am 5'8 and long limbed but their stuff has always been fine. So those are going back and I'm back to nicking DH's coat whilst trying to work something out. ..

NameChange30 · 10/10/2016 19:48

My baby is due at the end of February and I've just ordered a maternity coat from Zalando, using a 15% discount code. They have a good selection of brands and styles, including some coats with removable panels so you can wear it as a normal coat after pregnancy.

I did also look at the Next, Gap and Debenhams websites and was surprised by how few coats they had. Only one or two if I remember rightly.

Runningupthathill82 · 10/10/2016 19:49

Complete waste of money IMO. October baby and January baby, and I walked 5-6 miles a day, right up until due date born times.

First pregnancy, I wore my cosy Monsoon winter coat with a giant wool scarf.

Second pregnancy, I lived in a massive fleecy parka.

But I didn't have any money to spare, so certainly couldn't justify 50-odd quid on something I'd wear for three months or so.

Rinceoir · 10/10/2016 19:52

I had an April baby and bought a parka in h+m- was lined and cosy and had adjustable waist so wore it the winter after as well, doesn't look like a maternity coat at all.

NameChange30 · 10/10/2016 19:53

Ooh just looking at ASOS, they have some stylish maternity coats for under £60.

The one I have my eye on is out of stock in my size Sad

ineedbanoffee · 10/10/2016 20:19

I just bought this - baby due in late December/early Jan: www.vertbaudet.co.uk/3-in-1-progressive-adaptable-maternity-parka-black-dark-solid.htm?ProductId=001000021&FiltreCouleur=6559&t=1#PWt7UyH09zq6ZDis.97

Have had two summer babies before, so never needed one. HOWEVER, I did wear my second child in a sling a lot through the winter, and was constantly a weird mix of a) boiling and b) freezing because she was a baby and therefore made of fire and was strapped to me heating me up, but I couldn't do my coat up around us so I was also freezing cold at all times.

So this coat has the babywearing panel and I'm hoping it'll solve that. The coat is okay. I look enormous in it though. It might like okay when I'm not preg/wearing a baby (adjustable waistband etc) but I'll probably sell on or pass on to a friend ...

ThirdTimeLuck · 10/10/2016 21:25

I bought one from new look when I was pregnant with my November baby, it was well used as I was still massive when summer came. I think I used it the winter afterwards too as it was comfy and didn't look like a maternity coat. I'd get one, mine was worth it.

Scrumptiousbears · 10/10/2016 21:28

I got one and sold it on eBay afterwards for £5 less than a paid for it. Smile

Dormouse1940 · 10/10/2016 21:41

I found designated maternity styles quite expensive but got a 'regular' coat cut in a bump-friendly style quite cheaply 2nd hand, which was perfect. Try ebay for something like a 'swing coat' or something similar
