Anyone with experience of SGA or IUGR at 37 weeks?

My baby is considered small with a low weight for this stage of the pregnancy. I'm being monitored carefully by my hospital but can't help but feel distressed about it. The fact that the hospital can't come with any explanation as to why this might be, only adds to this. Any advice from those who've experienced a similar situation appreciated.

my ds was born at 33 weks due to IUGR he weight 2lb 15oz another baby born at the same gestation weighed 4lb 1oz
The hospital couldn't give me any reason why this had happened even though I was told my placenta would be looked at I don't think it ever was. I have my own theory as to why it happened though.
ds was born healthy and just needed to learn to feed and gain weight.
Have they said how much they think the baby weighs?

Bounce1 · 06/02/2007 17:24

Hi - Last week's scan came up with an estimated weight of around 4lbs. I'm having another scan tomorrow to see if there has been any progress, after which it will have to be decided whether we go for an early delivery by c-section. Illogical as it seems a lot of my concern comes from the fact that both my husband and I are quite tall (he's 6ft and I'm 5 '9) which made me think the baby's weight would be closer to the average. That said, it's really reassuring to hear that both your babies were born healthy.

Hi Bounce - my dd was born at 37 due to IUGR. I posted a long post on a thread a couple of weeks ago - will see if I can find it. The thread might help you too... but any questions just shout !

Wheelybug · 06/02/2007 18:07

here

Bounce1 · 06/02/2007 18:29

Thanks j.a.m and Wheelybug. It's hard not to fret but your comments are comforting. Fingers crossed tomorrow's scan has some positive indicators.

Hi Bounce1! I'm another that had a baby with IUGR - if you've read the thread that wheelybug linked to you'll have read my story there

Ds2 was delivered at 38+5, weighed 4lb 15, was perfectly healthy, breastfed straightaway and is now 2 weeks away from his 1st birthday and absolutely fine (apart from chicken pox but that's another story!!)

Hope your scan goes well today.

Bounce1 · 07/02/2007 18:07

Hi all - scan was not as encouraging as hoped for and I am now being scheduled for a c-section on either mon/tues of next week. There was some growth but not enough for the consultant and midwife to be assured that everything is okay. Doplers we're fine, but they think there may be something wrong with the placenta that is not coming up. I'm trying to stay positive, as is my husband - poor guy, dealing with both a weepy wife and mother can't be easy- but it is hard.

Bounce, the fact they aren't rushing you for a section is a good thing as I had ds the day after my scan showed IUGR
I hope everything goes well for you next week

Wheelybug · 07/02/2007 18:14

Hi Bounce- sorry to hear things weren't more reassuring but as whoops says, the fact t hey aren't keeping you in is good. I wasn't allowed to leave the hospital after my 37 weeks. I was admitted immediately and induced (which led to c-s).

And presumably you'llbe 38 weeks by then (or near enough) so term, you'll just have a littl'un ! Go and get some early baby clothes over the weekend (mothercare, m&S, gap)and some teeny nappies (mothercare) and some big pants and arnica for you.

Good luck - look forward to reading the birth announcement.

twoplusone · 07/02/2007 18:26

as the others have said sorry you didnt get the results you wanted.. Try not to worry too much (hard I know) but the fact they have let you home and not doing c-section straight away is good.. I was kept in hopistal from 28weeks until I had DD..
Good luck hun.xx

After all the medical talk this afternoon, it's so nice to hear comments from personal experience, it certainly brings things into perspective. Shopping with intent is probably going to be a very good distraction this week end - especially looking forward to the giant pants part of things! I will keep you updated on our return from hospital, and thanks for your messages, they have made an enormous difference to me.

I expect you're in shock - I know I was when the consultant wanted to book me in a few days later for my c-section! I was convinced the baby would be a couple of weeks late, so to be pulled in at 38+5 was about 3 weeks earlier than I was planning for!

As the others have said, there's obviously no immediate danger. As I understood it, it's a case of "better out than in"! If the baby's not growing inside, then get it out while they know it's still healthy and start feeding him/her up!

Best of luck for next week!

my dd1 was born by c-section through this. They were monitoring her due to a cardiac condition and she had not grown for two weeks when I had a scan at 38 weeks. She was born by c-section an hour later.

Second - big knickers, arnica as well as tea tree oil for putting in warm water to bathe the wound.

eidsvold · 08/02/2007 08:24

the lack of growth was not attributed to her cardiac condition. They felt that at 38 weeks better to have her out and feeding her than have her in a compromised placenta as they called it.
