I am expecting my third in April and baby has been back to back for 4 weeks - has come round maybe 3 times in all that time and it hurts when he does. I have an anterior placenta.

Do you think that maybe his cord is short and he can't come round and that is why it hurts if he does?

I know babies can turn but he just isn't. My first two babies didn't do this and could always feel their back down my tummy - but not at all with this one. My tummy feels really soft most the time - movements are fine - but did go in to get monitored the other week as movements had slowed considerably for 2 weeks. All okay now.

My midwife says he will turn - but I just have this instinct that something isn't quite right. Have made a doctors appointment for thursday to try and get a scan done.

What do you think??

Have you read the homebirth website about optimum foetal positioning? Will look for the link in a moment.

It said that 2nd or 3rd babies most often do not settle head down into the pelvis in an anterior position until at least 3 or 4 weeks prior to the birth, and in some cases only turn at the last minute - due to there being more room compared to a first birth, when the baby is more likely to engage at about 6 weeks before due date.

Someone posted about an anterior placenta - this makes it more difficult for the baby to get into the optimum anterior position for birth, but it is still possible.

homebirth.org

you need to click on 'antenatal preparation for labour and birth' then 'optimum feotal positioning'

I had an OP baby but they didn't know e was a OP baby till I was in labour but I had him within 3hours 15mins of going to the hospital which was quicker than my son before and a less painful labour too, I was told that if it happens with this LO sit forward on a chair for a few hours a day on the run up to my due date!

I'm not worried about the birth bit - my last was OP - and have done lots of research in preperation for this one being OP - thanks for the link though. It is more that he doesn't move round to the front at all with everyday movements - I follow all the guidelines like being on all fours and leaning over my birth ball - do you think he has just found a comfy spot and has decided to stay there??? He is head down.

could it be due to the anterior placenta that you are not feeling many movements?

10weeksandcounting · 06/02/2007 14:24

I can feel lots of kicks etc up high and across top of tummy but he doesn't turn around at all - which the other two did. Am I just completely paranoid?

10 weeks - when you say it hurts when he comes round, do you mean it hurst when he's turning, or once he's there. I always feel most uncomfortable when this one is turning, but then it settles down. Hope you can get a scan to set your mind at rest that it's nothing more than him liking that position (picture him in there, thumb in mouth - "no, I am comfy this way, don't see why I should move").

bramshott! It hurts when he is in position as such - but happens so rarely haven't paid much attention iyswim.

Hi, My placenta is anteriorly positioned too, and despite being 27 and a half weeks pregnant I hardly feel my baby move! I'm worried cos its my first baby, and friends that are about 27 wks pregnant too seem to feel lots of movement!!Is it normal to feel so little movement - and is the placenta being positioned anteriorly abnormal, or uncommon? Does anyone have any advice?should i worry about the lack of movement, or am I just being a paranoid first time mum!!

10weeksandcounting · 07/02/2007 13:05

jaani - if you are worried about movement and baby is really quiet you should call your midwife. Mine hardly moved at all for two weeks - went in to get monitored and low and behold off he went into a frenzy - there is something spooky about monitoring/movements!

I am definitely going to ask for a scan when go to doctors as it also occured to me that if he doesn't turn round because the cord is short - there is no way he can come out!

thanks 10 weeks, i think i will give my mid-wife a bell. I'm not due to see her until next thursday, but still if i call her it'll put my mind at ease. I think it's a good idea for you to request a scan, better to be safe and mention all your worries to them about the cord being short etc, that way they should check out everything extra carefully. keep us informed!!

10weeksandcounting · 08/02/2007 20:18

My midwife soesn't seem to think I need to worry about it but will refer to consultant if want to - also said could go for weekly antenatal if really worried. Really don't know what to think.

My midwife said the same, and reassured me that most women feel a lot less movement with an anteriorly positioned placenta. Anyhow, when I actually get to see her next week I may push for another scan anyway. My husband and I did a search on line last night on anterior placentas, and it was really reassuring - apparently it's quite normal to feel very little movement!! I still would like it if i felt baby a bit more regularly though!! Anyway, time to hit the sack for me am getting to the stage where I'm well and truly knackered all the time - again!! but got stuck at a train station waiting for delayed trains for over an hour this morn, which I guess doesn't help! Take care!
