Do we need a video baby monitor?

What's your opinions on normal baby monitors vs video baby monitors?

If you've got a video one are they worth it or do you think you would have been fine with a normal one?

Does anyone have recommendations for both normal and video?

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out baby monitors. Read our baby monitor reviews for a list of the best products on the market.

Hope that helps! Flowers

All these suggestions are really helpful! When we come to get one I'll definitely be referring back to this to help make a decision.

Thanks all for saving me the money of buying one before the baby is even here, I was getting carried away with lists and things we would need without thinking about how long it would be until we would actually need to use a monitor!

They were not around (video ones) when my son was born and they were pretty new when my daughter was born.

When I had DC3 I was a bit "who needs a video monitor, its ridiculous. The old type was fine" then we ended up buying one on offer.

Best thing ever Smile as others have said you can see if the crying is because they need you or just because they're having a bit of a moan. No more creeping in every five minutes to check and waking the baby.

I also cannot be worrying if someone has hacked in to look at my sleeping baby, it is in my room though so I do drop a muslin over it when I go to bed!!

I have a wifi one, it's great for if I put him down then want to go downstairs for an hour before bed (which rarely happens, but still...) Cheaper to get that than a "baby brand" audio or movement one.

It was suggested to me that unless we lived in a mansion (we don't!) we would be able to hear a baby crying anywhere in our house or garden ... and to save the money for more interesting things. So we have managed to get 2 children through infancy with no monitor at all ... Waiting to be attacked for my irresponsibility but babies make noises and not every noise needs you to jump up or watch them!

mrs of course they make noise once they realise they need to. But because of the video monitor I can see my toddler wake up and sit up. So I go into her and she smiles Smile no crying. I love it.

For us, totally worth it. Cost about £80 i think. It's a Motorola one that zooms, can move round remotely and plays music. It was peace of mind for us as babies (and even toddlers) make some strange noises so it's nice to just have a nosey Smile

We have the infant optics one. It's amazing - I can actually see him breathing and the range is good, even in our old brick house

Ours was indispensable.

You could be downstairs or even outside in the garden and see that they're OK. Massive help.

We've used a sound and movement monitor for both of ours. It has been great. I did consider the video one when pregnant with our 1st but thought I'd become too obsessive. I became that anyway 😂
Still am to be fair, no sound I like more than the beep beep of the monitor at night

I don’t use a video baby monitor, it’s not very convenient because we often travel, it’s reluctant to carry a camera with me and fix it in the same way. My husband and I bought a baby monitor from MonBaby. It suits us best. Small, inexpensive, easily attached to the clothes of a child and has good functionality.
