I have really bad eczema on my scalp and last night put honey on it as a natural treatment (read this might help online), then I started panicking about the botulism spores. I know you can safely eat it when pregnant, but not sure if it gets into the blood and doesn't go through the stomach if that is safe. I am really getting upset about this - if anyone can offer any advice that would be great.
Thanks

Ok calm down, honey is perfectly safe in pregnancy. It is not going to absorb through your hair in to your bloodstream.

Babies can't eat honey until they're one years old due to infant botulism but you will be fine and so will your baby. Please stop panicking.

Thanks for your reply. I was worried as obviously the skin on that area of my scalp is fairly scaly and broken - it's not like normal intact skin.

Absolutely fine. Do not worry. Flowers

Just scared that the spores may have entered in through the broken skin to the bloodstream and pass on to the fetus as I know that the fetus/baby cannot deal with these spores due to the immature gut.

No. There is absolutely no chance of that happening.

LetsJunglyJumpToIt · 06/09/2016 12:47

The only risk of getting infant botulism is if an infant physically eats honey.

MammaMia1234 · 06/09/2016 16:05

If it the spores are broken down in the mother's gut then I understand they cant pass to the fetus. But if there is another route through the bloodstream?? Am i just being extremely neurotic as per?

I am a worrier, and even as a worrier I can honestly say that this wouldn't worry me.

I can see that you are suffering from anxiety - please believe us when we say that the chances of any harm coming to your child due to your broken skin coming into contact with honey is zero.

Spores don't work in the way you describe.

The thing you are worrying about can't happen!

There is no problem, trust us.

I was really anxious throughout my pregnancy so I do know how you feel. Please don't worry about this Flowers

PotteringAlong · 06/09/2016 19:18

You are being neurotic. Really, you are.

MammaMia1234 · 06/09/2016 20:41

Ok. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and reassure me. I really do appreciate it it as I am struggling quite badly with anxiety so far in this pregnancy and knowing there is somewhere to turn is a great comfort. Xxx

Agree with everyone else - you're having a panic for nothing, stop worrying. And blame the hormones!

As an aside, I used to have terribly dry and irritated skin on my scalp. It's horrible and I really feel for you. I used to put on warm honey mixed with olive oil and wrap my head in cling film then a towel for an hour or so. I looked utterly ridiculous but it really made a difference.
