Gestational diabetes-anyone else?

I've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and I'm finding it really nerve wracking! Anyone in the same boat and want to share war stories and food tips? I'm 27 weeks and this is my first pregnancy.

I've only been monitoring my blood glucose for a few days and so far the readings have been ok-I have to aim for 5.3 fasting (before breakfast) and 7.8 after meals. I'm really hoping to be able to avoid insulin! I had a look back at some old threads on here and there was some great advice. I'm definitely getting the Burgen bread as 1 slice of my normal toast gave me the highest reading yet.

@anutteridiot same happened to me - 10 days between being diagnosed and getting the monitoring equipment and diet 'advice' (which was a higher carb and sugar diet than I usually eat Hmm). Also a bumpy pregnancy here too and was so upset when I had a GD diagnosis added into the mix. But - I've just eaten a GD friendly lemon cheesecake Grin

@AnUtterIdiot @butterybollocks sounds like we have all had a bit of a bumpy pregnancy and then GD to add to the mix I had a prolapsed disc in my neck earlier in the year before I was pregnant but was taking medication which I had to come off early pregnancy making the whole 1st trimester a bit rocky.

I will spend a bit more time looking at the website as I’m a bit confused about the high fat aspect. Was told I could eat as much cheese as I wanted but surely that can’t be good?

I have to be careful with insoluble fibres with the UC so some veg, fruit and salads are a no go. Brown rice, pasta and bread are all out as well which are all the things they’d suggest you eat with GD

GD LEMON CHEESECAKE sounds delicious though did u make it or buy it?

I find the things I can eat really weird. I cannot eat any fruit without it spiking my sugars. But, I can have five Oreos and have a fine reading, even with spike testing. Most veg gives me heartburn and acid reflux (carrots are horrific, I’m actually crying in pain from it). I can actually eat two slices of granary bread each morning with a low number. I had Nutella on a slice of bread mixed with peanut butter, got a 7.0 after. It’s not low, but its under my 7.8 max. But sugar will give me a 8. I was borderline when I failed at 26 weeks. I passed my fasting (and my fasting levels have always been under 5.3, except twice in 11 weeks) but my 2 hour was an 8.1 instead of the 7.8 it should be.

So I’m 37 +6 and still diet controlled. I can eat cereal in the morning, without a problem as well. I just know I’m lucky, but at the same time when I was first diagnosed I was freaking out about what I could eat and my dietician gave me really bad advice.

Not sugar, fruit.

I can eat Muesli for breakfast as long as I add a good helping of double cream, take out some of the raisins and add extra nuts. Can't really tolerate fruit at all - maybe about 5 blueberries if paired with cream.

I made the lemon cheesecake - it's a recipe from the gestational diabetes uk website. I've also been making their chocolate brownies and going to give the chocolate mousse a try. I made the peanut butter cookies which make a brilliant snack.

Been out for lunch today - wetherspoons mixed grill with half a buttery jacket potato. Had a really good reading afterwards Smile

BTW do you ladies know if you're having boys or girls? Boy here - apparently GD is more common if you're expecting a boy.

I was diagnosed at 29 weeks with GD (I passed the pre drink test but got 14.6 after the glucose drink test!) I’m now 38 weeks and due to be induced next Saturday at 39 weeks. I’m another huge fan of the GDUK website and FB page, its literally kept me sane for the last 9 weeks and I can’t say how much it’s helped me in controlling my blood sugars. I struggled with my fasting numbers between weeks 32-36 (which is notoriously a tricky period due to hormones) so was put on night time insulin but by following the GDUK website advice almost all of my post meal readings have been under target (in 9 weeks I’ve had 3 over). The brownies/peanut butter cookies recipes from the website have kept me going!

I’m having a girl. I’ve used some of the recipes and suggestions on the website. Especially the suggestions related to takeaway/restaurants.
