Started noticing a few weeks ago that my ankles were getting swollen - however, today this has gone to an extreme.

I look like Mr Blobby, my calves and feet look like they just run into one another, like there is no ankle there - my skin is so tight it is actually quite painful now.

Each night i put me feet int he foot spa then rub peppermint lotion into them but nothing seems to work - Anyone got else anything i can try????

Desperate SpringChicken x

Thanks guys Just having my legs rested higher than my heart doesn't seem to work but will definitely try lying on back with legs against wall - did see this in one of my many books, so surprised i haven't tried it already.

Thanks for your honesty Secur Read about your swimming, maybe i'll give that a go too - or maybe not, having noticed the state of the backs of my thighs yesterday - YUK YUK YUK!

Next midwife appt is on Tuesday so will mention to her then as isn't swollen ankles along with other things a sign of pre-eclampsia? Have always had really good blood pressume up until now though, so see no reason for it to be anything sinister.

If all else fails will stick my feet in a bucket of ice and see if that works

Springchicken,
Just some support. This is my third pregnancy and I've never had swollen ankles until this recent hot weather spell. Find it is worst if I've had a day at work at my desk and not too bad if I'm at home, can wear shorts and flip flops.
Hope you feel better soon

Isn't drinking more (rather than less?) water supposed to help? I think maybe that (and lots of walking?) prevent swelling for me.

i have got this a bit, sc, but not as bad as you these remedies sound good - i wouldn't reduce fluid intake, either. if anything one would need more, i should think.

had to take of engagement and wedding rings for the duration of this heatwave.

I had swollen ankles a lot when I was pregnant with DS1 (born mid July). Sitting with feet up made no difference for me. It was much worse when it was hot. Drinking lots of fluids help, as does mild exercise (helps the circulation). Swimming is meant to be good. The only real cure for me was to have the baby . I guess massage may help as well.

Swollen legs are very common in pregnancy - most midwives don't react to it much because it is so common. Swelling with pre-eclampsia is apparently a whole different league - rapid and dramatic, and not only legs - particularly hands and face. Other signs are seeing stars, headaches, upper abdomen pain (and protein in wee - but you probably won't be testing for that yourself).

SC - It is an indicator of Pre-eclampsia. I would definitely phone your MW just as a precaution.

Mt BP was perfect all through my last pregnancy, then for no reason it had shot up at my 37wk antenatal check-up and remained up until DS was born 2wks later!!
