Where are the unisex baby clothes?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and haven't started shopping yet. I was having a look online at what is available and had a little look in the shops. I cannot believe that I hadn't noticed but there is very little choice aside blue and pink.

There's one website I found for unisex baby clothes and it's all monochrome. MONOCHROME.
The local facebook baby clothes group sometimes has batches of newborn stuff for sale and it's all either girl or boy stuff.
The shop had a few items in yellow (under "girl" wut?) and hardly anything in green. The rest: blue and pink.

I don't get it. They're BABIES, why can't they just have a section for cardigans, babygros, blouses etc, in all different colours. Why are we expected to develop their personal brand straight out of the womb? Why is their gender the most important fact about them?

Has it always been like this? I'm also getting a lot of pressure from all comers to find out the gender at my next scan. What's the rush? Once it comes out, everyone can start saying how she is x because she's a girl or y because he's a boy, they don't need to start now, do they?

I'm just going to raid charity shops for the yellow and green newborn stuff. I just thought shopping for a newborn was going to be less polarised.

This is my constant bugbear. DS's favourite colour is yellow but it's almost impossible to find yellow wellies, tops, jumpers etc as everything is so gendered now.

Mothercare's little bird range has lots of bright coloured stuff that can be used for either sex.

Whatsername17 · 20/08/2016 12:47

I know I'm having a girl but still finding this a massive irritation. I don't want to buy her a wardrobe full of pink. It's boring. I'm painting her nursery duck egg blue and accessorising with pastel green, pink, yellow and purple. I just want some baby grows in green, purple, yellow etc. With my older dd we didn't find out the sex so she lived in beige which is really boring. Then people bought a lot of pink. Despite this, people still thought she was a he! Grin

I've bought lots of unisex in John Lewis. I knew I was having a boy, but as he was 4lb 12oz when he was born on Monday, I've found that the tiny baby clothes tend to be more unisex. Colour wise, lots of mint green, bits of yellow and grey available there.

Placemarking for excellent shopping suggestions. I'm 26+3, no clue what we're having and want some bright (primary colours, stripy, spotty etc) babygrow! I've been making some cardigan/hat combos in bright colours but I want to buy stuff too!

John Lewis
H&m
Sainsbury's
Polarn o Pyret
Boden (some)
Jojo Maman Bebe
Next (some, they cater for all tastes, but look in the Directory/online or in a big branch and they always have bright baby clothes)
Little Bird at Mothercare
Sometimes Asda have some nice stripe sweatshirt hoodies.

Quite a few places, but generally hidden in boyswear. But boy stuff is not exclusively "blue with cars on". Girl stuff is much more "pink and glittery".

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2016 13:36

I also got some fantastic bright spotty/striped/animals babygrows from Primark. They looked lovely, but gave both DC eczema.

Toby Tiger
Piccalilli
Frugi
Bob and Blossom

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2016 13:36

Boots

TheCrumpettyTree · 20/08/2016 13:57

Next, Mothercare and some bits from the supermarkets. I didn't find out the sex with either of mine.

I certainly don't understand the rush to go and buy pink or blue. Now my DS's are toddler age I'm bored of boys clothes all being blue.

Pestilence13610 · 20/08/2016 14:09

Oh lord I thought you were being a bit daft, sorry. It was a lot better 20+ years ago. stuff like this is what I dressed mine in but at a lot less ££.
Good luck, if you keep an eye open something will probably surface in the boy section

Frugi and Toby Tiger have been my favourites :)

summeraupair · 21/08/2016 05:46

Boots have some really nice stuff in grey and mint green at the moment and it's in the buy one get half price deal too!

LynetteScavo · 21/08/2016 06:28

Gap always seems to have a unisex range.

Artandco · 21/08/2016 06:31

I don't think it's an issue if you look carefully. I have two boys but they have always been dressed fairly unisex.

I buy a lot from French stores or German and Dutch.

Mama owl is a great place

Bee182814 · 21/08/2016 06:39

I'm with you on this. I'm due DC2 any day now. We know she's a girl but I just can't stand the girl clothes in the shops at the moment, all vile, in your face, too bright, too patterned etc. She's not a bloody doll! dC1 is a boy and I loved all the boy's stuff weirdly. You definitely need to branch out from the high street for the nicer bits of unisex stuff although h&m has been good and a few odd bits in gap. Try Zara newborn stuff (only online I think) polarn y pyret good for brights.

YorkieDorkie · 21/08/2016 06:47

M&S seem to have a girl section, a big section and then sole gender neutral stuff between. I buy lots of girly things but the baby grows, vests are all GN.

JoJo Maman Bebe are excellent.

YorkieDorkie · 21/08/2016 06:49

Oh my god typos!

A girls section, a boys section and some GN stuff.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 21/08/2016 07:12

When I was pregnant I bought some nice cardigans, vests and leggings from Zara in the Mini section. They do nice bright colours that would be fine for girls or boys

Other than that:
Marks and Spencer baby grows
H&M
Mothercare do the odd multipack which are neutral.

PotteringAlong · 21/08/2016 07:15

As others have said, look for little bird at mothercare. Next have some nice bright unisex babygro's too, as do H&M

DownWithThisSortaThing · 21/08/2016 07:20

FWIW I didn't find out what I was having either and wouldn't find out if there was a next time. DS had a lot of gender neutral clothes (sometimes from the girls section, if I saw something I liked) for at least over a year. I like bright colours and patterns and tbh finding nice baby grows and vests was pretty easy. Now he's nearly 2 and out of the baby sections, I'm noticing even more of a contrast between the girls and boys clothes. The boys stuff is just more and more sludge colours, awful tshirts with sayings on them, or character stuff like minions, avengers etc. I mainly shop for him in Zara now.

Trifleorbust · 21/08/2016 07:42

I've found it really tricky just to buy simple whites from department store shop floors - it must be just that, in general, the demand for it isn't there, so they've put it all online. Got a Mothercare starter pack, some white wool cardigans from Boots and Mothercare, some mixed Muslins (automatic typing keeps trying to write Muslims!) and vests and things like that. But then I found out the sex and bought a few pink bits as well 😄

bonzo77 · 21/08/2016 07:58

Just keep looking. All the stores have neutral stuff, just it's hidden amongst the gendered things. Multipacks can be annoying as they often have 2 perfectly OK garments then one that is pale blue / bright pink. Though my boys have worn the odd bit of pink.

Mine mostly wore white baby grows with bright hand knitted cardigans (mum made those) when tiny. Then leggings (try "tights for tots") and plain body suits. H&M do a good range.

Afreshstartplease · 21/08/2016 08:02

I have bought a few bits from next and h&m for this baby. But I have bought standard boy stuff too because it was nice

surroundedbyblondes · 21/08/2016 08:04

Just saw an update from Polarn och Pyret in my facebook feed with some lovely looking, bright coloured, gender-neutral baby stuff.

As others have said, their things aren't cheap but they last really well and can be passed or sold on.

blinkowl · 21/08/2016 08:07

H&M for basics.

And the gorgeous Sewing Circus for special stuff. A lot of it is dresses but not a bit of pink in sight.

It's not cheap (£30 dresses and about £20 trousers) but really well made and DD's dinosaur dress has lasted ages as she wore is as a long dress, then a a short dress with leggings, and now as a tunic.
