Mine didnt' have it but was reading about it the other day. I got the impression that although it might be a sign of problems, it usually meant nothing at all except extra monitoring in pregnancy. What have you been advised? Did they look for other abnormalities?

bundle · 30/01/2007 16:10

are they going to do a more detailed scan trace2? I think peanutbutterkid's right, it can mean the baby has problems but it can also be there with a "normal" pregnancy.

they have offerd me an amio, on friday but to scared to have it, coz they told me theres 1% m/c and they usally are over weight and over 40, and i am both, i go back on thursady for a second opion! with a diffrent consulant

trace2, the miscarriage rate varies more over how many that person has done. My consultant had an excellent record and I've had 2 amnios. Are they going to do another scan before the amnio?

trace2 · 30/01/2007 16:23

dony know, was to upest yesterday as scan man said it could be chromosomal, then they fecked some one else, then put in a room to wait to see consulant, when we told him what the man in scan said he went mad saying am going to have words with him and just said to come back thursday

and about the amnio its only a small hospital and only do them on fridays when needed too

misdee · 30/01/2007 16:28

right ok, weigh up what you will do if the amnio comes back that there is a problem? will it make any difference to you regarding the baby? would you terminate? if you wouldnt, is it worth the 1% risk as you are obviously scared about the 1% risk.

i have heard of one artery thingy in normal pregnancies, and remember not all disabilities are picked up on amnios anyway.

thinking of you trace2.

bundle · 30/01/2007 16:29

they've really not handled this very well, I would phone and ask if you could chat with the consultant over the phone (make a list of questions and write down the answers) about your worries. it's the least they could do.

trace2 · 30/01/2007 16:30

thank you for replying, i dont really know if i would keep the baby for diffrent resons, but the consulant did say the amio might not pick up every thing if its strutual

OP posts:
bundle · 30/01/2007 16:32

I think you need to chat with them about the range of problems which could be there - and then have a detailed scan. and talk to your partner about all of this too, x

trace, i spoke to a genetic counsellor at my hospital, maybe you could speak to one too? (at another larger hospital if yours doesn't have one)

trace2 · 30/01/2007 16:36

genetic counsellor how do i find out about one? sorry can not think straight

OP posts:
misdee · 30/01/2007 16:38

i googled, and found this which i think is reassuring

'It is likely that you will receive a more thorough ultrasound scan in order to detect any abnormalities. Since ultrasound scans are very good at picking up abnormalities, if you have a normal ultrasound, then it is likely that your baby will be born without any congenital or chromosomal abnormalities. A fetal echocardiogram may also be performed to check the health of your child.
In the presence of an otherwise reassuring prenatal ultrasound, the only other change to antenatal care one might make is a growth scan to make sure the baby is growing at a ?normal? rate toward the last month of pregnancy'

is that of any help? i dont know muich about all this stuff so sorry if it isnt.

trace2 · 30/01/2007 16:40

thanks misdee any help is good, i am going to make a list for thursady and ask about an other scan just to make sure

I'm sure there'll be a genetic counsellor in eg St James's hospital in Leeds but not sure which bit of Yorkshire you're in. It's not fair that you have to wait so long when you were treated so badly. I hope you manage to talk to someone - ring your GP who might be able to help, x

gingergirl · 30/01/2007 16:48

Hi trace
don't have any experience but am going through something similar after worrying results at 20 week scan so can understand your concerns. While looking for information for myself I found this site \link {http://www.womens-health.co.uk/sua.asp\link} hope it works and is helpful as to the likelihood of problems
