how many weeks are you?

a weight gain of 20 pounds or so is neccesary in pregnancy, including a small amount of extra fat

the rest is increased blood and fluid, breast tissue, baby, uterus, placenta etc...

i don;t think cutting out calcium when you are pregnant is a great idea....

weight gain does not proceed at a massive rate throughout the whole pregnancy....if sickness kicks in , you will not gain either !

congratulations!

I didn't "lose" weight as such during pregnancy, but I weighed aroudn 4kg more at the end than I did at the beginning (ie my fat bits reduced and my bump grew and I looked much better for it)

WestCountryLass · 30/01/2007 12:33

I haven't gained a pound yet and I am 31 weeks, but I was carrying an extra stone before, although I would be quite happy to put on half stone before I am due.a

Being sick for 20 weeks and having flu for last 3 weeks have not helped.

I think if you need to lose weight for health reasons and are eating a balanced diet and taking some exercise once or twice a week then you will gradually lose a bit, despite being pregnant.

I weighed 2 stone lighter after both my pregnancies than before. I am a bit of a heifer though!

I've barely put on any weight this pregnancy (I'm 33 wks and have gained 3kgs), no sickness and was maybe carrying half a stone more than I should prior to conceiving
I did drink quite a fair bit prior to being pregnant and since the NY DP has been on a health kick as well. We follow low GI food plans(I have to due to erratic blood sugar levels)
In the early days it can be breast enlarement with dd I had horrendous hyperemesis barely ate but still put on weight as my breasts went mega over sized.
I think so long as you eat sensibly controlling weight gain is perfectly possible and the calorofic energy demands of pregnancy coupled with a sensible eating plan can certainly assist overweight folks shed weight when pregnant
I'd be tempted to get some dietetic advice though to make sure all food groups are catered for properly though.

24 !! well, 9 pounds is fine.....!!

puddleduck2001 · 30/01/2007 13:28

I've sort of lost weight but not on purpose! was a 9st4ish pre pregnancy, was only 8 st5 at 13 week weigh in, and Im now 9stone at 34 weeks! its madness, im eating well and bump is growing lots but the rest of me is skinnier than I have been for years...WTF? MW isn't bothered so I'm just thinking less to lose afterwards...

It's not a good idea to diet or to cut out dairy and wheat whilst pregnant, even if you think you are getting the vitamins elsewhere.

I am both wheat and lactose intolerant and have been advised to try to eat both whilst pregnant as there is evidence to suggest that I could cause the same intolerance in my baby by not exposing him/her to them in the womb (the exception to this rule is the whole peanut issue). Apparently babies need exposure to the "problem" food groups whilst they're developing in order to build up their own tolerance to them.

From what I can work out the current recommendation, assuming you were at a normal BMI before you got pregnant, is a gain of between 25-35lbs. If you were overweight it's between 15 and 25lbs.

prasessa · 30/01/2007 13:45

Dear Megglevache, I am 13 weeks with twins and I'm very concerned about weight gain eventhough so far I'm doing fine. I read a lot on the subject and apparently it's a bad idea to actually loose weight during pregnancy, even if you were overweight to begin with. When loosing weight (usually by burning fat deposits) a toxic chemical is released that can harm your baby. So, try not to gain too much but do not loose weight now. Good luck with your pregnancy!

MrsMcJnr · 30/01/2007 13:54

I was wondering about this too. I could have done with losing at least a stone and a half before conceiving but as I didn't I am trying to eat all the right things now and make "every bite count" as they say. I read that whilst we can live off our fat, our babies cannot. We need 1800 calories for us both in the first month. I used to drink and socialise alot so I am hoping that cutting that out might mean that by the end of the pregnancy I do not have as much to lose as I do now - wishful thinking I suspect! I was going to Scottish Slimmers before I got my BFP and my GP told me it is safe to continue as long as I take proper advice from them.

Mumpbump · 30/01/2007 13:56

I am very light, usually size 8, and put on at least 1.5 stone during my pg despite being "all baby" (can't remember exactly how much as I don't often weigh myself). I think most of the weight comes at the end. Gaining 9 lb at 24 weeks sounds pretty normal to me...

BrummieOnTheRun · 30/01/2007 15:14

I cut out wheat, reduced all complex carbs and dramatically reduced sugar. Felt great (iron levels sorted themselves out) and was much leaner. The baby continued to gain weight at a normal rate. It was basically a low-GI scheme, with plenty of meat and green and leafies. yum.
