I am a 36 yrs old mother of 2 teenagers and I have just found out I am pregnant..... Still in shock. I have read a few things and so much has changed ?..I have registered with a midwife, apart from that I really dont know what to do ?.. Anyone have some friendly advice, to an extremely shell shocked woman...

oh congratulations! you'll have to start again with all the nurseries etc!

itsmeNDP · 29/01/2007 12:31

Congratulations !

Not sure what to say really, apart from start taking folic acid (if you haven' already) and try to relax . The midwife will have all the latest advice for you at your booking appt.

lulumama · 29/01/2007 12:32

congratulations! take folic acid until 12 weeks, avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and check with the doc about any medications you are on....you will have your booking in appt with your midwife , she will guide you from there...

Mumpbump · 29/01/2007 12:32

I think you should probably go to see your doctor as well (my doctor's practice didn't like the idea of me having a booking-in appointment without seeing my doctor), but I think registering with a m/w is probably the most important thing. Congratulations!!

x post ! and ask any questions you want..usually, they get answered pretty quick !

Minxx · 29/01/2007 12:36

I got some folic acid this morning, and it was my daughter who told me to take that !I hear there is more complications with having a baby over 35, I dont want to search too much into it on the internet. Coz of the fear of getting paranoid.Got any good tips to help ?...

Congratulations minxx!
i had my first at 34 and am now pg with my 3rd - will be 38 when it's born. Risks are slightly higher, but i really wouldn't worry if I were you - my friend had her first at 42!

Minxx · 29/01/2007 12:45

Just been told multiple birth are common forr the older mother. I'm just off to find myself a nice cliff.......

how many weeks are you? often, with a multiple pregnancy, you get morning sickness very early and quite badly....

itsmeNDP · 29/01/2007 12:47

LOL @ 'nice cliff'

You'll fit in well here, minxx

Minxx · 29/01/2007 12:53

That one of my problems, I dont know how far I am gone ?... Could be 12 or 8 wks?... With my older 2 kids I didnt have morning sickness at all, with this one, oh my... I cant touch milk, coffee or tea. I have been feeling really sick for about 4 weeks now. The only thing I can stomach is soup !!!

Hi Minxx - and congratulations!!
Might be worth getting your GP or midwife to get you in for a dating scan - then you would know how far on you are. I think the earlier scans (before 13 weeks or so) are better at dating than later ones. It is also worth thinking if you want screening tests for Downs etc, some women do and some don't, it depends on what is best for you and your family. If you do, ask your midwife what tests they do in your area, because it seems to vary region to region and some of the tests have a time limit - for example nucal US scans have to be done before you are 13 weeks and 6 days along.
Hope your sickness lets up a bit soon.
All the best
GG

lulumama · 29/01/2007 15:59

well, depends on the sort of dribble!

agree a dating scan is neccesary especially if you are considering a nuchal fold scan xxx

Minxx · 29/01/2007 16:09

What is a nuchal fold scan ?....

Hi Minxx, I'm also pg at 36 years old. But this is my first. I'm now 16 weeks, and I was also clueless at first (apart from remembering to get some folic acid) but MW set me on the right path, and all seems to be going fine now.

We have decided not to take the various tests other than the routine 12 week and 20 week scans, but that is obviously a personnal choice.

A friend thought she was just through it all, having got her 1st son to 17 after her partner left at an early age. Then she found out she was pregnant and had to start it all again. But now she has a lovely 3 year old, as well as her fine 20 year old, so is very happy in the end.
