Male midwife???

Hi ladies,

It's Monday morning and my midwife appointment was supposed to be 30 minutes ago in my home. I just called to see if something had happened and it seems there was some sort of emergency so they will send out a midwife in about 20 minutes or so. A male midwife.

Is this common? I mean, I know there is no reason why a man shouldn't be a midwife but I'm a little gutted - I had hoped to have a nice conversation with a woman. I don't know exactly what I was expecting or hoping for, but it definitely wasn't a man!

Thoughts?

There was a male midwife in the delivery suite of my hospital.

I personally would prefer a female in that situation but each to their own. I know he was thought of as very capable and he was the one who answered a telephone query for me shortly after giving birth.

I had a male mw for some of my care with dd.
No different to a woman who has no children(i.e they haven't experienced it for themselves)

Don't worry too much. When I had ds1 I had a man give advice on breastfeeding as he was the midwife expert on bf! He was very supportive.
DS2 was delivered by a male midwife(different one) and he was great.

Apparently 50% of midwives in Spain are male. A Spanish (female) midwife told me that alot of women prefer the male midwives because they tend to be really nice as they try and get you over the fact that they're not female!

When i had my ds, there was about 6 midwives in the room as it was very quick birth and ds was getting distressed. 2 of the midwives were big muscley men. Didn't bother me at the time but i wasn't really in a position to object!

my sister had a male midwife..not for delivery, i don;t think..but at some point

agree with cazboldy..no different to a female midwife who hasn;t had children yet..

most obs/gynaes seem to be men however.....

So it was all fine. He was very sweet and supportive, made it clear that regardless of my age (40) I would be supported in whatever choices I make for child birth. I felt very comfortable. He is one of eight community midwives in my group that could also potentially delivery the baby as well, and after today I'm fine with that.

I feel much better now!
