I'm not sure what to do . Our holiday is now all booked but my husband is saying that as Spain has a moderate risk of Zika and Florida had an outbreak with no prior warning we could return from Spain or be in spain when an outbreak is confirmed.
He says we can't risk this
But no one else seems to be cancelling and o cat find any advice from doctors etc
Anyone else discussed this?

Hmm wish guidance was clearer.
Seems to be medium risk and has been there is past and could be there again
We are Looking into cost of changing to somewhere else
Risk may be tiny but so many unknowns. I just know being constantly worried about mosquitos doesn't sound fun Sad

I was supposed to go to Miami in April/May with work and didn't go due to possibilities of it spreading there. Of course, it's only just made it there but I would make the same decision again. I think your dh is being sensible. It took us 28 months and 2 X mc to get to this stage and would not risk it for anything. I have a friend who isn't even going to France this year due to the potential risks. It's just not worth the risk in my opinion however for us to get to the actually "being pregnant" stage in the first place was an uphill struggle.

I was in Majorca in last month and 18 weeks pregnant. I read in the local English newspaper while I was there about Zika in Spain as I hadn't even thought to look. After much research from what I could tell all cases that had been reported (about 5 I think), where from people who had travelled back from South America, so not actually virus carrying mozzies in Spain itself. While it did freak me out for about an hour, after I had stopped panicking.. in fact I am far more worried now I am back home about having a car accident or getting run over, both of which are far more likely!

Oh and just for a little perspective there have also been 60 cases (since 2015) diagnosed in the UK, however as the page states: ZIKV does not occur naturally in the UK.

I went to Italy in June and was worried beforehand. But, like others have said, the mosquito that is found in Europe doesn't typically transmit zika. It has been able to do so in lab tests, but not very effectively.

I spoke to my gp who advised the risk of contracting it while I was away was minuscule. I used 50% deet spray (the Life Systems one), applied religiously and didn't get bitten once (I usually get bitten quite a lot). Also kept doors and windows closed to our room.

You should go and enjoy your holiday!

I didn't go abroad this year for this reason. Just not worth the risk. There may only have been six confirmed cases but they are just those that have seen a health professional. Lots of people won't even know they've been infected.

If it's in Spain there the chance it can be transmitted.

Are those deet sprays safe when you are pregnant?

Evergreen17 · 09/08/2016 07:07

Madness. I am Spanish and going there next week.
Not even worried.

MrsH87 · 09/08/2016 07:11

Wilting - deet is apparently fine. I checked with gp.

elQuintoConyo · 09/08/2016 07:34

I live there. I think you are worrying about something so, so, so unlikely to happen.

Come on over - I'll have a jug of sangria (alcohol-free!) waiting for you Wine

Portugal was classed as low risk (same as UK) by WHO in May. It's pretty much the only Southern European country that was which is why we are going there. I've still stocked up on spray and bands for repellant.

Lweji · 09/08/2016 09:18

You should stock up, mozzie bites are very annoying. But you only need them at dusk.
