falling down maternity trousers - any tips

I am preggers for the 2nd time (17 weeks). My first pregnancy wardrobe included a pair of jeans and a pair of trousers from Topshop which were fab esp the trousers but i wore them out (thunder thighs ) and I have gone up to a size 16. I excitedly dragged dp to Oxford street to spend a xmas pressie voucher at top shop and bought a pair with elasticated pockets. I was convinced they fitted so cut out the lables and wore them but they keep falling down Builders bum is not a good look. What can I do? I was wondering if one of those bump tubes in a size too small worn over them like a belt might help? Anyone found the solution to this problem from their own experiences, please!

Hmmm would i stick the velcro to myself sounds itchy! I had thought about safety pins I am gutted the whole point of buying maternity wear is to avoid safety pins.

braces?

I've got a couple of those boob tubes for your belly and they seem to do the trick. Got one from Topshop and a couple from ebay. They also help if you want to wear a pair of pre-pg trousers and have the buttons undone, although not sure how much longer I can keep doing that I seem to be carrying this baby in my bum and thighs!

I'm pregnant with my third (23 weeks) and during each pregnancy, I found that pretty much all maternity trousers fall down. There have only ever been two exceptions; a pair from Blooming Marvellous when I was expecting my first and a pair of jeans from Mamas and Pappas that I bought about a week ago. I never have problems with these and can happily walk up flights of stairs or rush for buses without fear of my trousers plummeting to 'lip level', if you know what I mean, or even my knees (as has been known)!

The one thing that both of these pairs have in common is that they are both 'on the bump' fits and I really think that's made all the difference. I've had 'over the bump' jeans with the stretchy front panel and they slide down almost as soon as you put them on. In this pregnancy, I've tried 'under the bump' trousers, as they seem to be all the rage and stocked just about everywhere but I only have to take a couple of steps or move slightly and I end up with builder's cleavage.

My advice would be to try a pair of 'on the bump' fitting trousers, if you can. I would happily recommend the Mamas and Pappas jeans as they are, without doubt, the best maternity jeans I've ever had.

Oh thanks - very interesting all the messages - had thought about braces but didnt think they would work because of summer tops and being funny on boobs! Worth investing in one of those tubes though and trying mamas and papas for any future trouser purchase!

well surely you'll be growing - so will soon fill them up ??

same problem here, only resolved by borrowing husband's belt. it had to be a large one since my matternity jeans are below the bump, so the belt goes around my wide hips. and the belly bands (mine is from top shop) are wonderful to cover everything up (underpants showing, etc...).

i have some on the bump next trousers with elasic pocket things, im 38 weeks and they still fall down so its not a matter of growing into them as i have outgrown everything else!

i have a piece of elastic threaded through the belt loops and tied through the button hole, its working really well

I agree with the advice of Belly Belts. They are brilliant. Not enough to keep your trousers up if you're wearing normal trousers unfastened, but they're alright with maternity trousers. I got mine from TopShop and Ebay as well.

banoffee · 01/02/2007 16:00

Just to add, I've received a pair of FunMum black trousers that I'd ordered today, and they are BRILLIANT!! They don't fall down at all and wearing them just makes me want to dance!
The only problem is I'm not gonna want to take them off and they'll need washing often.
I think I might buy a pair of jeans from them as well! I'm so happy!

Dophus · 01/02/2007 16:04

I have some lovely ones from formes -t hey drive me mad. However they have a long cotton jersey bit that reaches up high enough for me to tuck in my bra. They still slip it's just twice as embarrassing when I'm caught adjusting them.

pookey · 01/02/2007 19:33

LOL Dophus cant believe they fall down even when tucked under your bra!

banoffe really pleased your trousers fit so well but just a tiny bit

elastic through belt loops sounds like a good idea too must try that if topshop tube thing doesnt work.

Ta all for tips

Banoffee, I'd forgotten about funmums! I had a pair of black trousers and some jeans from them last time and they were great. Foolishly, I thought all maternity trousers were like that and for the last 6 weeks I've been struggling with a pair of 'early pregnancy' jeans from Mothercare.

Thanks for the reminder!

jabuti · 01/02/2007 19:42

aahhhhh...i wasnt sure about the bra description, now i understood it! complex engineering there.

fairyandbump · 03/02/2007 22:37

Sorry can't help with actual question but just wanted to share my experience of same problem-don't wash your jeans at 60 degrees in the hope of trying to shrink them, if they have dimantes on as I did. Clearly the temperature melted the glue and all the diamantes fell off!
