I had a big baby too bad the size 2 nappies will def be too big.

Too many sleepsuits and vests. I would say 3 max.

Muslins I would just take one big one for covering up while bf. They're not usually very sicky straight after delivery so not necessary.

You will need probably half a box of breast pads max. Boobs dint leak that much in the immediate aftermath.

You can cut the number of clothes and pjs and bras for yourself in half but keep the pants.

You definitely need a towel too.

You won't need 2 tubes of nipple cream

I would forget the cotton wool and just use the water wipes while in hospital.

If you're using sleepsuits you won't need socks.

Be prepared to be told off for the dummies btw.

Double up on maternity pads.

There's no need for dummies if your breastfeeding. Not at this early stage anyway!

Nipple cream lasts forever so 1 tube will be plenty.

Size 2 nappies will be too big.

Good list otherwise, most people only stay a night postnatally so you should have plenty. Good luck Flowers

WellErrr · 14/07/2016 09:11

If you're planning to breastfeed then chuck the formula and dummies out - in the really extremely unlikely event that you don't have enough colostrum, hospital will provide milk.

Otherwise very thorough!

WellErrr · 14/07/2016 09:11

And yy to the nappies.

Lj8893 · 14/07/2016 09:16

Yeah I missed that, there is no need to take formula to hospital if your planning to breastfeed.

jasmin6082016 · 14/07/2016 09:22

They told me to take it just incase breastfeeding doesn't work, and okay the dummies were just incase as I'm not keen on them anyway, I will add in a packet of size 1 nappies, I just assumed I would need a lot as they told me induction can take up to 72 hours, and the reason I'm being induced is a medical priority that I may need to stay in but Ahhh well thanks guys :)

Throat sweets! Gas & air really dried out my throat. I also swear by coconut water to keep you hydrated during and after.

Lj8893 · 14/07/2016 09:25

I am really surprised that a midwife would tell you to pack formula in case breastfeeding doesn't work. It's so rare for somebody not to have an colostrum, having formula with you is just setting yourself up for a fail.

Grassgreendashhabi · 14/07/2016 09:29

I was told baby was going to be big. 9lb plus. She was born at 6lb . Take some small nappies and a couple of small baby grows. My partner ended up raiding asda a couple of hours after she was born.

Grassgreendashhabi · 14/07/2016 09:30

LJ88 - I wish I had thought of formular my colostrum didn't come in. For three days.

Next time I'll be doing the same.

GipsyDanger · 14/07/2016 09:33

The things I found to be useful when I was in labour was a hot water bottle for my lower back (baby was back to back and wasn't allowed Gas & air for several hours at hospital)
And lanosoh for the nips. also the walking dead mobile game, I didn't get service in the hospital (in for 3 days) and the tv thing didn't work.

Maybebabybee · 14/07/2016 09:37

My DS had a dummy from 2 days old and he is EBF. Never caused any issues for us.

I don't see the harm in having one there if you need it Smile

jasmin6082016 · 14/07/2016 09:43

Thankyou guys! I'm not going to automatically assume I can breastfeed and I don't bring a back up just incase it doesn't work out hence why I bought it, I was thinking a hot water bottle but no where to fill it up so I have a plug in heat pad instead :) I know sizes can be off on scans but at 34 weeks he measured 6lbs 6oz so I assumed he would be around 8-9lbs when born baring in mind he will be 2 weeks early, will pick up some small baby stuff! :)

Although tbh I agree with pp re the formula, no need to bring it to the hospital.

You need to give breastfeeding longer than a few days if you're serious about giving it a go, it's super full on the first 5/6 weeks but it gets way easier after that.

Very few women physically "can't" breastfeed but many do give up (no judgment on those who do) due to lack of support and also lack of knowledge on how intense the early days can be.

Lj8893 · 14/07/2016 09:48

That's really good that a dummy didn't effect your breastfeeding success, but the fact is that a dummy can have a negative effect on breastfeeding so these things are worth considering.

Absolutely there are times when colostrum doesn't come in but a good maternity unit should provide formula in these instances, especially if it's only for a temp time. Studies have proved that women who plan to breastfeed but pre-prepare formula etc "just in case" are less likely to be successful at breastfeeding. I'm not anti formula feeding at all (my dd was ff), I'm just putting these considerations out there so the op, and anyone else planning to bf, have the best chance possible.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/07/2016 13:21

Even a hairy baby you won't need a brush but it's up to you x

helenatroy · 14/07/2016 13:22

Excellent advice. Will save this page.

Peeporeader · 14/07/2016 13:29

Personally I wouldn't bother with jumpers for you unless you run cold. Maternity wards are blimmin warm places!

newroundhere · 14/07/2016 14:35

Useful thread - thank you. I think I need a bigger bag!! Wink

HaggisnNeeps · 14/07/2016 15:33

They tell you it can take 72 hours but it can be less (7 hours in my case :)). I agree with everyone else, smaller nappies. I ended up having to get tiny baby nappies as size 1 didn't fit! I would make sure you have different sizes of babygro's too. I made the mistake of taking the same size and none fitted.
I would take straws; if you have gas and air it can make you quite dry!
I had a bag like yours and ended up home the same day as having DD1!
Good Luck!

Wheels1986 · 14/07/2016 17:00

Wouldn't bother with any nipple cream personally - best thing for sore nips is your own milk! Rub a bit on and leave them to dry, will sort you out no problem :) It's also great for baby too, my little on had a sore belly button after his cord fell off, rubbed a bit of breast milk on it every few hours and it cleared up in no time! Same when he had a gamma eye from peeing in it! Magic stuff your own milk!

Keely93 · 14/07/2016 17:56

My friend was told her baby was going to be big. They were guessing 11lbs at 40 weeks. He was born by c section because of this. He was 8lbs at 42 weeks.

jasmin6082016 · 14/07/2016 21:59

Thankyou all!

The jumper is for when I go home, it's boiling on the wards so I have vests and loose tshirts and a nighty for that!

And well let's hope mines not long!

Everything I'm taking is just incase, I don't like to not have things!
