Pregnancy

I'm 17 might be pregnant

Saturday 2nd July I had unprotected sex, to then later that day discover it was my ovulation date.

I usually get really bad PMS syptoms, bloating and cramps for a week before my period is due, my period is due Thursday and I have had nothing.

And today I had light brown discharge that had no smell. I've been checked for STDs so I know that isn't a problem. I also have a strange pain in my area but nothing like period cramps (I don't know how to explain)

How likely is it that I am pregnant?

And can any of you give me some advice please? I know if I am pregnant I am definitely keeping the baby but advice on other stuff.

Thanks x

God, I would have had no idea I when the hell I was ovulating at 17. I'm 30 now and I'm still not sure I could tell you now. I've never been pregnant because I never missed the pill apart from once and I took MAP.

What pill were you on? Most of them remain being extremely effective even if you miss one, which you say you haven't, and take the next one at the same time.

The pill stops you ovulating.

If you're on the pill and taking it correctly chances are you're not pregnant. If taken correctly it is extremely reliable.

However, you should always use a condom to prevent sexually transmitted diseases as the pill doesn't offer any protection against those.

I don't understand why you think you are pregnant, if you haven't missed a pill?

There are people who've fallen pregnant on the pill as no contraceptive is 100% effective, however if you've been taking it properly every day and haven't had an upset tummy or anything i'd say it's unlikely you're pregnant.

You say you had unprotected sex. Being on the pill means you had protected sex surely? Not from STIs but a very low chance of pregnancy. Have you taken it daily and not had any D&V?

Ah beaten to it, I too know someone who has become pregnant whilst taking the pill, in fact she has more than one child this way. She is a very bright articulate woman, who now uses another form of contraceptive. In fact I know of one other, she again would definitely have read the instructions and followed them. It does not always follow.

Unlikely you're pregnant if you haven't missed a pill but I would buy a test for peace of mind.

Peeing on a stick would be the logical thing to do but I'm not sure how accurate it would be if you're not due on until tomorrow. You may need to repeat the test in a few days.

Most of the women on MN have been in your shoes at some point, it happens. You need to do a test but before that it would be handy to fathom out how you'll feel if it's positive or negative.

I know 2 girls who got pregnant while on the pill. That's probably why I can't let my mind rest about it. And I have been checked for STDs and so has my partner so I don't ever think to worry about that. As I said earlier I'm going to test on Friday and then again around Tuesday next week.

You have no reason to think it's failed. The pill stops ovulation. Is it the mini pill?

I know a woman who became pregnant aged 46 whilst on the pill - my mum. I also know someone who became pregnant with the coil in situ - me. Contraceptive failures happen, but if you're that worried about pill failure it would be useful to use condoms too.

I'm assuming that because you needed an STD test your partner didn't use a condom? And I'm assuming that because he didn't wear a condom he is delighted at the prospect of becoming a dad?

I think there must be a tiny chance of knowing two people, 3 including you if you are pregnant, who got pregnant on the pill IF they took it correctly. It's 99.9% effective!

Not saying it doesn't happen but most likely in those cases there has been a slip up or a missed pill. If I'd been taking the pill correctly as you say you have, it wouldn't even cross my mind to wonder if I was pregnant.

So you didn't have unprotected sex? As you are on the pill.
I don't believe anyone can tell when you ovulated just by talking to you.
I doubt you are pg.

For 8 years I was on microgynon(sp) pill and used no condoms and didn't fall pregnant. If you're taking the pill correctly, you don't need condoms (providing you're both sti clear). Obviously there always is a chance that the pill could fail, (about 99% effective, someone's got to be the 1%). So use condoms too as a back up. But it's very unlikely you're pregnant.

The two girls who fell pregnant on the pill, did they take it properly?

My mum was 17 when she fell pregnant with me and she was on the pill - hence why I said it does happen as nothing is 100% effective.

Sometimes your withdrawal bleed can be a little late aswell although if you've started spotting thats probably the beginning of it. I used to take my last pill on the Wednesday and usually didn't have a withdrawal bleed until the Saturday/Sunday but some months it'd be later on, around the Monday night/Tuesday morning.

As a pp said noone can really tell you when you ovulated unless you're tracking your ovulation and if you're on the pill one of the main effects is to prevent ovulation. Hopefully you get your answer soon, I tested positive 5 days before my period so if you're due a withdrawal bleed tomorrow you could test today.

I'm just racking my brains to think what kind of workplace has a midwife visit every week? I've worked in hospitals and gp surgeries but would never dream of confiding in a random healthcare professional that I might be pregnant. What kind of workplace is it OP?

What makes you think you were ovulating then?

Report

My work helps gypsy and traveler women who live roadside with their healthcare. That's why every Thursday there's a midwife. I see this midwife every week so it's hardly a stranger I've had many conversations with him.

Also I took the STD test before I started sleeping with my partner (because that's what you're supposed to do) and so did he.

I took the pill exactly according to the instructions for 20 years. It worked perfectly for 15 years, then I got pregnant twice, still taking it correctly.

To those who think well why did she rely on the pill after the first time - I continued taking it after my first child was born, as I used it also to control my very heavy periods, awful PMT, it completely cleared my skin up (when I stopped I went straight back to getting huge zits and boils again) - but I also began using condoms as well for extra protection. One split, I figured I was on the pill so it would be fine... and DC2 was conceived.

So it can happen. It's unlikely, but you really need to take a test asap when your period/withdrawal bleed is due. Hope you get the result that you are hoping for.

17yo who knows when they ovulated,
who knows what the typical wait is for the GP surgery is,
has a male midwife,
whom OP knows well and already sees weekly,
even managed to take STD test before sleeping with partner,
with work involving gypsy & traveller women.

Very grown up.

My mom & both my grandmothers were pg and married at 17yo. but they wouldn't have managed any of the rest. Seems to be fashionable to be a pg teenager on MN right now.

Lljk, my 18 year old has an app that tells her when she's likely to ovulate and date of next period.

None of the others though x
