Costs for Portland Hospital

Has anyone given birth recently at the Portland. I'm trying to figure out if we will get away under 15k or how much More I should be budgeting.

From what I've heard from friends, you'll need a big chunk more than that. Is there a particular reason you would choose the Portland? Bear in mind there are no full service hospital facilities on site, so if something goes wrong for you or your baby you will need to be transferred - potentially to different hospitals. A friend who opted for the Portland didn't deny it was a pretty luxurious experience, but likened it to giving birth in a hotel.

I would recommend The Portland - if you can afford it. Our bill was more than 15k. Due to complications in my pregnancy it was the best option for me. My consultant was great and on hand 24 hours a day.

Thank you. User, can you tell me how much over you went? The consultant fee is 7500 plus hospital fee of 6k + 2k for epidural etc. I just can't figure where the rest of it goes? I'm happy with the facilities at the Portland. They do have a NICU just not level 3 so I won't transfer to their care until I'm past 28 weeks. The one thing they don't have is an ICU for mothers but it's incredibly rare to need ICU level care during labor. I chose the Portland not for the hospital really but for the consultant. He specialist in a complication I have and this is where he delivers privately.

They do have a paediatric intensive care.

I had ds at the Portland and I am having DD there when she arrives not long now.

It cost 16k with ds and I expect the same for DD unless there are any complications.

Just in case this helps anyone else here's my worst case cost estimate:

£7,350 - emergency c-section
5,500 - consultant fees
660 - anaesthesiologist
995 - epidural
635 - induction

£15, 140.00 total

Hopefully I haven't missed anything!

Have you considered their midwife led care for low-risk pregnancies... I guess I'm doing the same thing as you and trying to sort out my budget!

Couldn't fault the NHS care I received. They are all qualified to the same standards...

They might not be entitled to NHS! A lot of Portland hospital patients come from abroad, and others get it paid for as part of their employer's relocation package to match what they'd get in the USA.

Will you have had all your early scans etc.? If not, you'll need to pay for those.

Also extra nights over the or in most of the pricing packages are charged additionally.

The lindo wing at st Mary's is a lot cheaper than the Portland. And you have the comfort of level 3 special care being just over the road at St Mary's if it's needed.

Wow can't imagine paying £15k to give birth tho spent £27k to get preg

What do you get for that kind of money? Assume private consultant one to one?
