Hi - I found out last night that I am 11 wks preg!!! so clearly am way behind on eg booking a maternité - can anyone suggest what I need to think about in order to decide on one, how I go about getting into a decent one at this late stage, reccommend any drs/maternites? + as I am completely taken by surprise and have no idea how the system works here/what to expect can anyone give me any pointers whatsoever on anything linked to pregnancy/pregnancy in paris? Basically I am completely lost + know that I don't know where to start!

Hi - I was in Paris for a weekend break last Nov, when I had a ruptured ectopic. We found 'The Maternity Hospital', but I'm sorry I can't remember what it is called. Not everyone knows about it, but it one of the best maternity hospitals in Europe!! (And apparently the celebs book themselves in there just like the Portland in London.) Although the food is not on the same level. The care is very good, and they looked after me and dp at the worst time we have had to deal with.

It is possibly known as a Woman's Hospital. Even some of the taxi drivers knew it. But you should be able to find out if you go to any hospital. The only thing is there english is quite minimal.

Hope that helps just a little.

If that's adding a bit of reassurance at all, I'm french but live in the uk, and all my pregnant french friends/familly, said that the care was amazing. They are a lot better than in england, you get more scans (according to my cousin, 1 every month now!!! As opposed to 2 in England). I would feel safe if I were there.
I am 35 weeks pg, and I have had to demand another scan, and they kept trying to put me off it (Why?). They asked me: "Why do you want a scan? What are you hoping to see?".
I was amazed so I said: "My baby".
They assume that if everything is ok, you shouldn't have a scan. So why do they give so many in foreign countries?
Also they found some glucose in my urine, and I had to have a blood test to check for gestational diabetes. When I went for the test, the midwife did a full blood count... except the glucose!!! I was furious, I couldn't believe that I had to remind her! She had to take more blood from my other arm and she really hurt me! She tried to get out of it by saying that the tick in the box was too small!! That's not my problem!! They should communicate better with each other. They kept contradicting each other regarding the results. One of them laughed at me when I asked her if the results would be available the same day, and when I told her that last time they had my results within the hour, she didn't know what to say. I had the results in the evening in the end.
Fortunately the results were fine, but the incident opened my eyes and I lost faith completely. I'm glad I asked for another scan now, as I'm worried to have been overlooked at my 20 weeks scan. I'm sorry to say this but I don't trust the midwifes, as they don't seem to know what they're doing, and they do not communicate. You always have to chase them, they don't tell you anything. I found the antenatal classes a great help in this country, but when it comes to health or emergency, I have no faith at all.
They are a lot more thorough in France, and they keep you 5 days minimum at the clinic after you've had the baby.
It's the same in Prague, Italy and Spain!!
Same with the scans, they have at least five in Italy (and this might have changed to more). So why is the UK so backwards when it comes to health?
You're lucky, I would feel really safe if I were you!!
Good luck!
