Hi I haven't had a thyroidectomy but I think my mom did & she went on to have DB & me. I have had the radioactive Iodine Treatment & have a DD. We both now have an underactive thyroids which are treated with throxine. I think it is very difficult to get the right balance. My nan had a thyroid problem too. Must be heritary in my family.

My cousin did although she was advised to wait a year before trying I think.
Her little girl is now 3 and she's trying for another one now.

JAG123 - WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE RIGHT BALANCE?

When they do a partial thyroidectomy for hyerthyroidism they try to leave enough of the gland to produce sufficient thryroxine to maintain normal levels. Very often too much is removed and the body has insufficient levels of thyroxine requiring replacemnt with the drug thyroxine.

This is not usually a problem though. The thyroxine tablets are safe to take and without side effects if monitored regularly to maintain the correct dose. Where as thyroxine suppressants such as carbimazole have many undesirable side effects if taken long term.

I had a nearly total thryrodectomy when i was 15, i was severly over active, and still ended up having iodine when i was 19 (am now taking 150mg thyroxine daily), since then i have had 3 pregnancies over a space of 6 yrs, i was told i would get pregnant only if my throxine levels were normal, and it was true when my thyroid level was ok i got pregnant and had special care through my pregnancy, when my levels were out i found it difficult to concieve.

hope this helps xxxx

Sorry only have chance to post now & then but Madold has explained it better than I could of. I have a yearly blood test to check my thyroid & they adjust the level of thyroxine accordingly. In fact I had a blood test last week & for the 1st time since I had my dd 6 years ago I have had to drop my dosage to 100 micrograms.
As Jade said during pg you have more blood tests so they can keep a check.
Hope all goes well for you.

I was 15 wks pg with ds when I had my thyroid 'almost' completely removed. As i was so thyrotoxic it was dangerous to leave more of the gland than was strictly necessary. I now have to take large quantities of thyroxine replacement every day but whilst i take them I feel great. It was hard to get used to the idea I would be on medication FOREVER but I feel ok about it now. My consultant never mentioned that my future fertility would be compromised and 18 months after the op I fell pg withdd after barely any trying at all. My dh is also hypothyroid and obv his fertility is fine too.

The only problem with a near total thyroidectomy is the likelihood of losing parathyroid fnction. I have this problem , which stops you absorbing calcium properly and I need to take huge amounts of calcium and vit D. I am always in and out of the nurses office for blood tests and am usually only borderline normal for my calcium, but when i was pg the second time I was careful taking my medication and trying to get enough calcium. HTH
