Hi all,
I wondered how common it is for waters to break so early?
I am very worried although I never let that show to my partner of course as its our first. She has been given steroids and will be sent home tommorow evening if the contractions have not started.
They would like to induce her in two weeks (37 weeks) but I am petrified about infections etc in between this time..
Any one been in a similar situation?Any advice regarding preventing infections?
Thanks for any help.yours petrified
Steve..

good luck steve - i hope things settle for you both soon x

Don't worry about the breathing in labour thing. They don't really cover that in the NHS antenatal classes anyway! She'll naturally find the best way to breathe for herself AND the midwife will coach her on that as well.

HI Steven

Your dw's contractions, may be painful braxton hicks contractions, which mean that she will probably have an easier labour as her body is doing preperation work. Hopefully should develop into proper contractions in the next couple of days, maybee they are giving you worst case, by saying 2 weeks

I think it is good you are worried and looking out for your wife, dr's and nurses do good work but don't notice everything. I've had much experience with that and now monitor myself and family if sick intensly. ask the dr's and nurses plenty of questions, before, during and after any treatment.

probably rambling now but wanted to tell you i was in hospital with a woman who's waters broke at about 30 weeks, she was not allowed home till she delivered the baby, given steriods for the baby and monitored constantly. I live in Oz so maybee different, but considering they have plenty of beds in your hospital I think that is the best place for her, are they doing scans to check levels of fluid for the baby?

Her baby was born at 37 weeks perfectly healthy they ended up inducing her though, as did not want to risk infection any longer.

Look after yourselves and good lucki

I have no advice to give as I have no experience of this but wanted to chip in to say that your DP is a lucky lady having you Steve. What a top bloke you seem

Best of luck and try not to worry too much ... you need to sleep too to keep your strength up for when that little baby comes home and runs you ragged

nwgreenmum · 25/01/2007 00:02

Hi all,
Just wondering how everything is Steve? Let us all know won't you (I realise that you might have other priorities however )

StevenLeia · 27/01/2007 23:38

Hi all,
Firstly may I say haw brilliant you all are for helping me with such great advice!..I'm humbled by your kindness!.
On wednesday morning the hospital decided there may be an infection and were going to go ahead with inducing.
Due to the days contractions before and how worn out she was they gave her an epidural, which was a grat help but she could still feel her right side quite a lot.
This started at 1.10 pm wednesday afternoon.
the strength of my fiance showed no bounds and her courage brought tears to my eyes each time I popped out on the odd occasion.
Thet kept upping the hormone up to 14.2? and checking for her cervix to dilate and by 4.25 thursday morning (15 hours later) it still would not go above 5cm.(She is a very petite woman if that makes a difference as the midwives couldnt understand why she would not dilate more).
At this point I was very worried because I didnt know if she could take much more having not slept since sunday night.
To my relief they decided to perform a c section, they had to do another injection in her back to numb the right leg,so after scrubbing up and putting on some dashing surgical clothes we went into theater and after a lot of hand holding and pep talking I heared our 35 week and three day old baby cry from behind the screen at 5.33 AM!! I responded by breaking out with a similar cry only a lot deeper and longer .
We have a baby boy called Riley weighing 5lbs 7 0z!!! with loads of hair and he is truly lovely!
Riley is just fine and tonight (sat) after all his antibiotics, blood tests and being under a lamp for jaundice for the last two days he is back in mummys arms and feeding really well!
Actually as he is premature he still has a very hairy back which I suppose is something you dont normally see in full term babys.he is very strong and lifts his head when I am feeding him.

My fiancee is sore obviously but walking about already and getting more back to normal by the second!..she is a truly remarkable woman and has the courage and determination of amazing proportions.
As for me I when being back at home have been a quivering wreck!
The incredible thing is when I recap the labour she went through, all the not nice bits she has trouble rembering!!how fantastic.
Being there though the whole labor experience has knocked me for six with regards to female determination,I honestly cannot think of a word to descibe it??????.
Once again you help has been invaluble..and for that I thank you so so much
Steve x

Congratulations!
A note on the hairy back. Both mine (boy and girl) had/have hairy backs. But then so does their father . And they were full-term babies too.

pooka · 28/01/2007 19:30

And he's gorgeous! You must be so proud.
