Stupid pregnancy question

I'm in my 2nd trimester (22 weeks). I know I'm not supposed to lie flat on my back any more but is it ok to do so if my head and shoulders (from about halfway up my back) are propped up well, like on a couple of pillows?

I know it's probably a stupid question but it's my first pregnancy and I'm quite nervous about doing anything wrong..!

There is no right or wrong way to sleep. My midwife reassured me that you should sleep however you feel comfortable. I've been sleeping slightly propped up on plies since about 28 weeks to reduce my heartburn on a night.

Having been pg twice I'd say that you could sleep on your back until you start to feel that you can't.

Plies???? I obviously meant pillows. Confused

For me that stage where I could no longer bare lying on my back was around the 16 week mark if I remember correctly.

Just enjoy the sleep, in whichever position you get comfortable.

FuzzyOwl · 26/06/2016 23:29

I slept on my back until the end in my last pregnancy and am now in this pregnancy (21 weeks). It makes no difference what position I fall asleep in as I always wake up on my back but figure I am up frequently enough for the loo and with cramp, that I am not in that position for too long.

You can sleep whatever way you want. Trust your body. It will protect the baby where needed.

Ah great thanks - that's reassuring. I'm actually still reasonably comfortable sleeping on my front or on my side if little one gets grumpy about that and starts kicking me. Which he does. A lot.

My question was more about when I'm lying in bed reading, or at the gym if I want to lie on my back to do certain stuff and prop my head and shoulders up on a yoga brick or something. But sounds like it's not too much of a problem. I'd heard lots of conflicting advice, from DON'T DO IT, YOU'LL HARM THE BABY to 'yeah, it's really fine, just move if you feel light headed'.

Yes as everyone else has said sleep whichever way you feel comfortable. I'm 36+3 and if I roll over onto my back in the middle of the night I wake up breathless or with cramp in my legs but my uterus will be a lot heavier than yours. Yours may not be heavy enough yet to compress anything - your body will let you know when it's time to move position.

Sleep hot he way it's most comfortable. Baby will soon kick you if they are uncomfortable

Beansprout30 · 27/06/2016 19:27

I was worried about this as I always slept on my back, midwife said it's totally fine especially as im not overweight. I do try to sleep on my sides but get cramp In hips and it's such a relief to roll onto my back

Vap0 · 27/06/2016 21:11

I asked the consultant about this at my last appointment and he did an eye roll at me as to say "you've been googling, haven't you?" And he said to sleep any way you feel comfortable. I sleep flat on my back with a shallow pillow as it's the only way I'm comfortable, he said it is fine. 30 weeks tomorrow.

Surely kicking doesn't necessarily mean baby is uncomfortable though sepa? How do you distinguish between an "oi move" kick and a normal one?
