Just back from clinic and I'm starting on insulin tonight
Not doing metformin

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 16/06/2016 15:40

I'm on both but I think tbh the metformin has been a bit of a waste of time, and I wish I'd just gone straight to the insulin: it has been much more effective!

PeppaPigStinks · 16/06/2016 18:00

I am totally confused!

Had my first growth scan and baby seemed on the line which is good.
I had a high yesterday of 9.8 then just before lunch I'd crashed to 3.8 (the dr tested it as I went to see why I was feeling so rotten).

I've got a consultant appt tomorrow.

Severn how are you?

Can I just shout this in here and stamp my feet like my toddler does.... "I want chocolate " Angry

Peppa - have you seen a dietician yet? How many weeks are you?

seven201 · 17/06/2016 10:53

Had our baby girl on Wednesday. She got a bit stuck coming out as along with breech her ankles were up by her shoulders so they couldn't get her bum out easily. Bit scary at the time as she was whisked off the side for a bit rather than being shown straight to me. I'd managed to express 1ml (!) of colostrum so she was given that at about 1hr20mins old. Her three sugar tests all came back fine :) she's feeding but it's bloody painful so I don't think we've cracked the technique yet. She's got massive cheeks and weighed 8lb 13.5 at birth. Totally in love Smile

Congratulations! I was hoping you'd come back and update. Glad all was well in the end and hope you settle in to breastfeeding soon.

TrouserSnake · 17/06/2016 20:03

Quick update from me, I saw the consultant last week who was unconcerned about a couple of high readings and then had a scan which was all normal now so continuing on the diet plan. I've lost 1.5kg! Still constant chocolate cravings though.

AndersArms · 17/06/2016 20:18

Me too. Am now 35+4 and have been on insulin for about 5 weeks now. My post meal readings are typically fine but my fasting readings are high and I am struggling to control them even with the increasing insulin.

The fasting readings are all over the place though - I forgot the insulin one night and got my best reading for about 2 weeks!

I am booked in for ELCS at 38+1 but had another scan this week as the baby is measuring very large. They will decide whether to bring forward. Although all of the baby's measurements are big, not just abdomen, so they think blood sugar could be ok and it's just a large baby. I have been warned I might be staying in hospital for several days as the baby's blood sugar must be stabilised before he can come home.

Interesting about the colostrum - have never been able to express before (this is DC3) and no one has mentioned anything yet, was assuming I would just latch him on after birth.

PeppaPigStinks · 17/06/2016 21:21

I had a consultant appt today.
It did not go as I had planned!

Looks like this will need to be a section. As my previous baby had a severe shoulder dystocia it is likely to happen again so a Elcs is safer for the baby.

I also walked away with a prescription for metformin which I wasn't expecting.

To be honest I feel really cheesed off.
Selfishly I am petrified of a section and was all set for giving an early Induction!

Hi Peppa, know exactly what you mean..I want chocolate too! I've been on insulin four times a day since 17 weeks and already tired of it all at 25 weeks. Not so much the insulin as the hypos which make life really difficult - especially at work. Seem to need to eat at times I don't want to eat. And not knowing whether growth scans will be normal or not. Not knowing whether will be induction at 38 weeks or section earlier. Sorry, am ranting. Just cheesed off too. Know its all my own fault and just need to get on with it.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 18/06/2016 18:42

It is NOT all your own fault mummy and you mustn't beat yourself up over it. Unfortunately, the bit about just having to get on with it is true though. How often are you having hypos? Have you had much advice on how to manage them from your hospital? I'm only in insulin at night, so have been lucky enough not to have any.

mummydoc123 · 20/06/2016 10:04

Thanks YAMAGTFO. I have really supportive medical team who have given me advice etc. Its the balance of how much energy you use and how much carbohydrate you need and how much insulin you need - this accompanied by the changing goalposts as pregnancy progresses and become more insulin resistant makes it a challenge. Had a bad day on Saturday and had 2 significant hypos for no good reason I could identify - this just happens some days - hence the moan! Anyway, back to just getting on with it and trying to stay positive. Still dreaming about chocolate though !

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 20/06/2016 10:41

I do think the combination of constantly changing resistance, coupled with the fact that in the grand scheme of things you don't have very long to get to grips with it all, makes GD a particular pain in the arse. How far along did you say you are?

mummydoc123 · 21/06/2016 19:22

26 weeks and counting! Been on insulin for 9 weeks now.

PeppaPigStinks · 22/06/2016 20:34

Mummy doc I am 29 weeks. Have been put on metformin!

I have been asked about a baby shower (I don't want it but that's another thread) but I am tempted to have a junk food shower once the baby is here GrinBlush

OP posts:
ChocolateTeacup · 29/06/2016 18:39

I am 29 weeks and so confused by it all! I had a positive GTT last week and tbh I kinda fell apart quite a bit, just one last straw to break the camels back :/

I don't understand how it works though, my readings seem higher when I haven't slept well though and higher if I miss breakfast. So today I have had 3 meals (although was sick after dinner) and my readings were Fasting 4.1 After lunch 4.3 Before Dinner 4.6 and bedtime still to go.

the other day when I had a nectarine for breakfast I had: Fasting 4.4 Pre Lunch 3.8 Pre Dinner 4.0 After Dinner/Bed 7.3

I have had one high reading of 8.0 after lunch the other day, I didn't sleep much the night before and had skipped breakfast as I felt sick my after dinner reading was 4.9 on that day.

It all just seems so random to me, and I have no idea how I will manage Butlins in a couple of weeks!

PeppaPigStinks · 29/06/2016 21:18

Chocolate teacup those readings look ok I think!

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 29/06/2016 21:58

Just popping in to say I had my baby on 22 June - a little girl. I had been due to be induced on 27 June at 39+6 on account of the the GD, but my waters went on 20 June, and when contractions didn't start I was induced on 21 June instead. I'll draw a veil over the labour, which ended in an emergency section for reasons unrelated to the GD. After all the fretting about baby being too big (bump measuring over, although growth scans showed baby to be average) she was actually a dinky 5lb 15oz.

Just hang in there - it'll soon be over! I'm enjoying no longer having to test my blood sugars and worry about diet and medication! I'll be tested at 12 weeks to ensure diabetes has definitely gone.

AveEldon · 30/06/2016 07:34

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut - congrats on your new arrival!

ChocolateTeacup - your post meal levels should be affected by what you eat not your sleep. Sleep is more likely to affect your fasting levels

What did you eat for lunch when you got an 8 afterwards?

ChocolateTeacup · 30/06/2016 10:47

It was the same sandwich I had twice before, Wholemeal Granary Bread, Chicken Salad & cheese. My post meal levels with the same sandwich have been 8.0 on the day I missed breakfast, and 5.0 and 4.3 on the days I didn't miss breakfast

ChocolateTeacup · 30/06/2016 10:48

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut -- Congratulations on your little one
