Yep, it's me.

Suddenly thought last night - do i need to buy breast pads? I am not breastfeeding, as have decided to bottle feed but didn't know if i still needed breast pads for when my breast are leaky?

They leak a bit at the mo but i imagine them to gush once you've had the baby

no you most probably wont need tham if you are bottlefeeding, I didnt - you do leak though but not really enough to warrant pads

emmatmg · 01/06/2004 14:01

Oh god, YES!

I didn't BF any of mine and still managed to get through about 70 of the bloody things.

Yes - would get a few anyway.

Don't want to turn this into a 'bottle vs breast' thread, but why are you so certain you won't BF?
Why not try it and see how you get on? If you try you can always stop, but if you don't, you can't suddenly start BF later....

Helsbels · 01/06/2004 14:07

why have you decided to bottle feed, Jems - any particular reason?

Toothache · 01/06/2004 14:07

I would say definitely YES! I used to wake up smelling of sour milk.... YUCK! I bf for a week, but it didn't work out so I stopped. But my milk had come by then and even the sound of a baby on TV crying used to set them off.

Ixel · 01/06/2004 14:09

i got so many free ones in various bounty packs, mailshots etc that I ended up not using any from the box I bought, and gave it away. I didn't find I needed them that much. I breast fed for 6 weeks.

Ask away, babe.

I personally would back the 'give it a go' approach. You never know.

SpringChicken · 01/06/2004 14:46

There is no particular reason why i have decided not to breast feed - have thought about it long and hard and only recently decided to go with the bottle feeding - just feel that personally, bottle feeding would work out better for myself and DP.
Haven't completely ruled it out - in fact, am still contemplating mixed feeding.

Thinking along the lines of, if i decide to bottle feed then change my mind it makes no difference at all, whereas if i decide to breastfeed then change my mind, I don't have anything organised as far as bottle's, steriliser etc goes.

Jems, can I e-mail you through MN?

oliveoil · 01/06/2004 14:50

You can leak during pregnancy as well apparently, so be prepared!

I breastfed for about 5 months and went through tons of the things, was mortified when one fell out of my top, hadn't done by bra up properly (pad fell out, not boob).

I loved b/f and didn't think I would tbh, you never know you may do too, but it is best to be prepared, I read the bloody instruction booklet for my steriliser about 100 times before it made sense.

xx

There is no reason why you can't have your bottles/steriliser etc (and breast pads!!) and still breastfeed or, indeed, as you say, mixed feed. For me that option was very successful. Also if you do breastfeed and like it and want to express, you still need bottles and a steriliser. Good luck!

sweetkitty · 01/06/2004 16:21

I've just bought a steriliser, bottles, breast pump, collection bottles, storage containers, breast pads, breast shells (they are so wierd, nipple the works (actually forgot a bottle warmer) and I plan to breastfeed. But if things don't work out I'm prepared I actually thought about buying a tin of powder just in case. Also it means DP can do his fair share of the night feeds if I express. He is very impressed with the breast pump and asked if I can try it out (I worry about him).

Springchick - no question is silly you're like me having your first baby and fretting about everything.

sweetkitty · 01/06/2004 16:22

I meant nipple cream not that I bought nipple although reading the brestfeeding thread I'm sure a few spare nipples would come in handy

popsycal · 01/06/2004 16:24

psssst
Maws breastpads are the best (maybe called tommee tippee now.....made by the same company....)

SpringChicken · 01/06/2004 16:25

Course you can Helsbels.
Think i will get some breastpads to be on the safe side - don't fancy having nice wet patches appearing out of no-where.

Didn't we all query your decision to bottle feed on another thread? And nag you into thinking about trying IIRC? Just so we dont start on you again!

I'd get some cheap breastpads if it's just to cope with leaking whilst your milk dries up. I don't think you need worry about dimples for nipples etc if you won't have sore nipples. If youo're thinking about using them whilst feeding (mixed or otherwise) then the posh dimpled ones are great - I liked Boots luxury ones.

SpringChicken · 01/06/2004 16:50

Yep Soupie - that's right - i should've learnt from then really Only kidding.

I completely understand why people think breast feeding is best and i completely accept others opinions regarding this too, i am one of these people who likes to know everything there is to know - However, i do think alot of people can sometimes be a bit overpowering with the whole "Breast is beat" thing - tbh, i think everyone should have the right to chose one way or another and not have to have a reason or explanation for their decision.

Maybe I shouldn't have wrote that - it was aimed at anyone in particular, as i said, i am grateful fro the advise received, i wouldn't ask otherwise!

sweetkitty - if you are not completely sure I would go and get a tin little can or pack of sachets of formula - just in case. Don't get it too early though as they are dated - week before is fine. DH ended up having to go to the 24 hour supermarket in a mad panic moment!

SoupDragon · 01/06/2004 17:07

I just wanted to make sure people didn't try to convert you again SC

You could find that you leak when the baby cries in the early days - it's a natural reaction that you can do very little about. I think pressing on the nipple can help IIRC.
