trying to lose weight when pregnant

I am 5 weeks pregnant. I'm also extremely overweight. I've got around 6 stone to lose. My aim is to weigh less at 9 months pregnant than I do now. I think that's pretty achieves or however the few people I have told in real life look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them!

I'm planning on doing it through healthy eating- following the slimming world plan mostly- and light exercise, such as walks and swimming. Anyone else in the same boat?

The best thing to do is speaking to your Dr and midwife for advice on first steps as you very wisely say you want to do this the right way.
Slimming world does have plans for pregnancy so chat to them as well.
Good luck and congratulations 🎊

If you do it healthy you should be fine :)

I wouldn't actively try to lose weight when pregnant without medical advice. Have you spoken to your midwife? When I had my booking in appointment I was referred to a healthy eating group (I didn't go Blush) and later I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was referred to a specialist diabetes midwife who I saw fortnightly from then on and had a meeting with a dietician who was very helpful. I managed the diabetes with diet and I didn't gain any weight in the second half of my pregnancy and weighed less after pregnancy than I had before. But that was all with medical supervision.

Good luck with the pregnancy.

Thanks everyone- I'm sure the midwife will mention my weight when I'm at my booking in appointment so I will ask for advice then.

If you eat healthy food and enough to satisfy your hunger there's no reason why you won't lose weight or at least maintain.
I think if you can get to the end with a small gain then you will lose a fair bit postpartum.
MW sometimes mention bmi but some are very relaxed about it. I think slimming world is a good choice and your MW will likely back it.
It's not ideal being overweight and pregnant I know (my bmi was 29 at booking in) but don't feel you have to fix it all now. It's much safer to limit your gain whilst pregnant and encourage healthy eating habits which you can continue with postpartum. Maybe try to maintain for the pregnancy and then lose the remainder after.
I'm not one for scaring people and do not believe overweight or obese people should gain the recommended 25-35lb a person with a healthy bmi should and the guide for obese is 11-15lb so have a chat with your MW for professional advice but it takes time and you and the baby are more important than numbers right now.

I weighed the same at 9 months as at my booking. I think it was eating little due to nausea, and no booze ( and the snacks and bad eating that go hand in hand with it).

I probably only had a stone or so excess though.

I also stayed pretty active. Swam 3-4 times a week and walked a lot.

I think it's doable. But as pp's have said best to do so with guidance.

I'm in the same boat!
I've been actively trying to lose weight- gym, healthy eating etc and am unexpectedly pregnant so am now worried about continuing these things. I have 6 stone to lose and am type2 diabetic so hoping for healthcare support.
Good luck!

CinderellaFant · 30/05/2016 22:23

Hi tattooedmummy, congrats! How far on are you? We have about the same amount to lose, I had just joined a slimming club a few weeks ago then I got pregnant, I'm still going but haven't told them I'm expecting yet.

I'm in the same boat too. Helps that I'm being so sick I don't really want to eat at the minute. I'm hoping that with our little sprout to think of now that I'll make better choices when it comes to food/exercise and this is my time to finally lose the weight (is this wishful thinking?!)

Good luck to all of you. Lovely to know I'm not alone on this journey!

I started calorie counting then found out I was pregnant- asked the midwife if you can continue calorie counting through pregnancy and she said the only "diet" they are happy for people to partake in is Slimming World. This is because there is little restriction in volume of food that can be eaten, the plan simply steers you to healthier, more filling foods that will naturally help you to lose weight (eg I believe you have to have 1/3 of every meal made up of veg or salad so no complaints from health professionals there, and you can eat rices and pastas and potatoes until you feel sated, alongside lean meats).

CinderellaFant · 01/06/2016 11:59

Congrats amylou!

Yes 44- that's the diet I am following- not restricting myself but eating healthier foods! 2lb off this week so I'm happy with that.

Been following with interest as I'm not trying to lose weight but don't want to put too much on.

Booking BMI was 27 and ate crap all the way through the first and second trimesters. Now 30 weeks and been trying to stick around 1900 cals a day using MFP for the past fortnight. Weight has remained the same for those two weeks which I'm happy with. And as others have said, it's made me focus more on what I'm eating - so it's been 1900 calorie of reasonably healthy food. Knowing I need to log what I've eaten makes me a bit more mindful in not just having that biscuit, or chunk of chocolate, or whatever.

I'd be delighted if I could get through the next ten weeks only gaining another 4-5lbs, which would (just!) keep me within the 25lbs max you should put on if you're overweight to start with. We'll see!

CinderellaFant · 01/06/2016 18:22

Good luck highlove- hope the pregnancy is going well! With my past 2 pregnancies I put on crazy amounts of weight, around 2abd a half stone per pregnancy and never lost the weight after, so just got bigger and bigger! I really can't do that this time, if I put on another 2 and a half stone it'll be awful and won't be good for me or baby!

Slimming world is a great choice to pregnancy as you can't to satisfy your hunger while eating well, I was still in the process of losing weight from my first when I fell on again I've been eating well and really active 10000 steps a day and 3 classes a week I've only put on 9lbs in almost 28 weeks (I lost 6 the first trimester so only 3lbs over my previous pregnancy weight) I don't have much to lose so no weight gain wouldn't have been healthy for me but controlling your weight is totally possible when pg and has the benefit of making you feel better. People are only noticing im pregnant the last couple of weeks Grin

@CinderellaFant and @amylou182.

I know this is such an old thread, but I'd love to hear you got on. What worked or didn't work?

I'm 5 stone overweight at the start of my second pregnancy and keen for advice!

Rebecca612 · 28/12/2019 13:21

I was the same! I’m 18+3 and everyone keeps commenting on how much weight I’ve lost! I think a combination of morning sickness, no alcohol and less takeaways made the weight just naturally fall off or stay the same during my pregnancy. I’ve tried to eat healthily but it’s Christmas (my birthday on Xmas day as well) so healthy eating is non existent right now but I’m still not gaining any weight. Just listen to your body and speak to the midwives about any concerns you’ve got. As long as you and baby are healthy, that’s all that matters for the next few months xx
