It's none of their business. Keep it quiet.

Plibble · 16/01/2007 19:57

They shouldn't be asking you about that sort of thing in the interview. Keep it quiet until you know whether or not you have got the job. Once you have a firm offer you can think about whether you want to tell them right away.

BibiThree · 16/01/2007 20:01

As far as I'm aware, even if you were to turn up 8 months gone, they have no right to ask you anything about your family.

I'm sure someone who is more knowledgeable will come along in a minute for oyu.

I had a bit of a nightmare with this last year. Took a job knowing I was 10 weeks pregnant. Told them about 3 weeks in & basically they made my life a misery, until I was forced to leave. Not trying to put you off I think i just got a bad un. Just choose your company carefully. Loadsa luck x

Dottydot · 16/01/2007 20:03

No - don't tell them. You don't have to, and anyway you might not want to tell anyone until your 12 week scan, so what right have they got to know?

I had an interview when I was 7/8 weeks pregnant, got offered the job and told them at that stage (they phoned me about a week later to offer it me and I said straight away I was 9 weeks pregnant).

They didn't retract their offer - partly probably because they knew they'd be in big trouble if they did, but also because my boss is fab and didn't have a problem with it at all - her first word was "congratulations".

LoveMyGirls · 16/01/2007 20:04

Kepp it quiet, do the job, prove you are worthy then tell them after your 12 week scan, in a ideal world this is what i would do. In the real world i find it hard to keep my mouth shut and i felt so sick and was freezing cold so it was obvious something was up.......

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/01/2007 20:07

i didnt get a promotion because i was pregnant but couldnt prove that was the reason. keep quiet.

minniethemouse · 16/01/2007 20:32

I work for the government (ooooh, get me!) and legally, I don't have to tell them i'm pg until I'm 25 weeks - would be difficult, but I might just not mention it and watch them try to work out how to ask me

bandstand · 16/01/2007 20:35

i am pretty sure you wont get maternity pay anyway,i worked it out once you had to be pregnant before you started... 9 weeks is early enough for you not to tell them i reckon. you say you need a job so you can't really be picky..how long would you be off for ? if you went back?

Mumpbump · 16/01/2007 20:40

No - they aren't allowed to ask and I don't think I'd volunteer this information. As someone else said, you won't get maternity pay, but presumably you are getting a good redundancy package to take into account your pregnant status...

minniethemouse · 30/01/2007 21:21

hooray... i got a job offer... thanks girls

Did you tell them?

mawbroon · 30/01/2007 22:03

You won't get Statutory Maternity Pay from your new employer, but you will get Maternity Allowance. I started a new job and found out a couple of weeks later that I was 5 weeks pregnant. They were really great about it but it was a temp job anyway so I left when I was 34 weeks. Congratulations on the job and the pregnancy!

ammylovesbabies · 30/01/2007 23:19

I started a job at 9 weeks pregnant- told them day before I was due to start and now I'm a manager there and my dd is 3.5. Your family and your bean is none of their business. Google it- know ur rights. x

Hope this might help....

You don't have to inform your employer that you are pregnant until 15 weeks before your due date. However if they don't know then you can't ask for the time off for your appointments to be credited back, so will have to take as annual leave etc. Sick leave, should you need it, will be taken into account on any reward scheme/pay rise etc as it will not be classed as Pgncy related.

It has already been mentioned but you will not get SMP but will get a maternity allowance. It is not that much so you may what to check just so you can prepare.

Any employer cannot discriminate, terminate or delay personal development purely on the grounds of preganacy. There are ways round this so if you do get the feeling things aren't working as well as they could be just be aware. If your employer begins to ask you questions without you telling them then they are out of line and you can remind them of that (it is illegal).

I personally think you should wait at least 6 weeks into the job or till you are 20 weeks before you even mention it. Just say your eating too much. Then you will have had time to find out your rights within that company and figured out what is the best thing to do.

minniethemouse · 01/02/2007 16:01

hummm.. no i did not tell them about my pregnancy. It is ok even though i dont have SMP. thanks babylove 123 for the link which is very help i also forwarded it to my friends.

Sorry to hijack ... have any of you been to an interview obviously pregnant and not told them?

I'm hoping for a promotion in work soon, and if I get to interview then I'll be obviously pregnant (twins) and don't feel like I'll get fair play if another candidate applies. It would be quite easy to disguise any pg related motive for not employing me within the scoring criteria used at interview.

Thanks

Congrats Minnie!

I had a very positive experience.

We had a complete reorg at my company a couple of years ago with 1/4 job losses. We all had to reapply (and compete) for positions within the new structure.

I was 7 months pg at the time and competing with two others. I not only got a job but also an important promotion even though they knew I was going to take 6-8 months off.

A sensible company will look to the long term rather than the short term.

ProfYaffle · 01/02/2007 16:26

I used to work in HR in local government so you'd think they'd be whiter than white - but - I applied for a promotion when v v pg. The manager for the new job called me for a meeting on my last day before going off on mat leave and told me she thought I was fab but wouldn't promote me because I was pg. I complained, she denied she'd said it (she also had a 'note taker' in the meeting who backed her version) and my manager also sided with her and told me I must have been mistaken

minniethemouse · 01/02/2007 17:01

One more thing i forgot to mention how i got the job offer. This is recommended by my boss who knows i am pregnant. He is very supportive and said to me - people judge your works and attitude but not my belly !!
