Just a warning for anybody else undergoing this screening but wanting to remain team yellow,

When you are asked if you want the X Y screening which will test for Turners and Klinefelters syndromes think long and hard if you don't want to know the gender.

I got my results through the post yesterday. Thankfully all really low risk which I know is the main thing, it stated ''low risk of monosomy X' which is Turner syndrome and only a risk factor for girls.
No mention of Klinefelters risk at all even though I requested the screening.

This has inadvertently told us we're having a girl when we specifically asked not to know.
We really wanted a surprise as this will be our last DC.

Sad

Came to write something similar but you've put it far more eloquently, Ellen.

Hope you get an answer from the consultant and please go and stand in the corner while you realign your priorities and think about the consequences of having a perfectly reasonable right to have a rant Wink

Andbabymakesthree · 28/05/2016 21:37

Thanks for the heads up. If I find myself in similar position at least I'm aware.

IkaBaar · 28/05/2016 21:38

Many years ago I used to work in an NHS genetics lab, so don't have experience of Harmony, but hopefully know something.

Surely they can't test sex chromosome ratios without testing for Klinefelter syndrome? I think they are listed as 2 separate tests as some people would make different decisions for a foetus with Klinefelter or Turner syndrome, so some may not want to identify a foetus with Klinefelter syndrome. It could be thought of as a coincidental finding when you have a CVS/amino for high NT etc.

I would guess at its most likely an error in printing the report - so definitely question it at your appointment. Maybe they forget to press the button to add the Klinefelter comment? I wouldn't go buying pink things yet.

I think calling people who have faced lethal diagnosis and, like me, lost much wanted babies because of that 'sanctimonious' and 'shitty' and 'morally superior' is utterly disgusting.

Im happy for you that your baby is healthy, id too be momentarily gutted if my sonographer let slip in one of my million ultrasounds what im having, but considering this baby comes off the back of my angel daughter who was diagnosed with a lethal condition it puts things into perspective somewhat Hmm

Congratulations Op Flowers

Ellen I think you're overreacting to the posts on here, I haven't seen anyone be 'shitty' in responce to your op. I think people are just trying to understand the information you were given. I agree with you primarynoodle.

Babettescat · 30/05/2016 09:15

Congratulations on receiving news of a healthy pregnancy.

Just wanted to say that I'm honestly and truthfully so very sorry for all women who have suffered from the loss of a child, be that before or after birth.

I would simply never assume that because i lost my daughter i have a right to cast aspersions upon the feelings of other women, irrespective of pregnancy when i have absolutely zero knowledge of their background.

I am so very upset that some of you saw fit to do exactly that to me.

It is hurtful and i hope you will think before making such presumptions in the future.

I hope you are ok OP, I honestly saw your original post as really helpful. I did ask for the sex of baby at harmony test but I would have been disappointed if they had accidentally revealed it if I hadn't. I think its information that is well worth sharing with others considering the test so thanks for that.

Congrats on your pregnancy SmileFlowers

O/p has made the assumption though that they haven't done a kf test/left off the results means the baby is female. Which is not correct, it is far more likely the test result has been left off accidentally.

She may have put people off getting sex related tests, if they don't want to know.

Looking forward to your update, o/p. Good luck tomorrow.

primarynoodle · 30/05/2016 15:25

I made no presumptions.

I am further shocked that you lost a baby and still think that is acceptable to say.

ElectraJane84 · 30/05/2016 15:38

THANKYOU for the info ellen this is actually really useful info to me because I'd like to know the gender of my bump ASAP. Flowers

Update:

I asked my consultant if they had forgotten to perform the Klinefelters test due to the lack of result.
Apparently not, they provide results for either Turners or Klinefelters as the baby couldn't possibly be at risk of both, obviously.
So as I suspected, the test does inadvertently reveal the sex. Whether this is a concern to you or not is another thing entirely.
I asked her they bother to tick the box on the form that instructs them not to include the sex of the baby in the results when it more or less reveals it in any case?
She said 90% of people undergoing NIPT want to know the sex, some people actually pay to have NIPT to discover the sex apparently, irrespective of risk factors for trisomies/aneuiploidies.

So I got my answer and can start buying pink Smile but I'm sticking with the lemon anyway.
We're still keeping the sex a secret from family/friends and DCs. I'm just pretending I don't know and haven't told DP about my conversation with the consultant.
