I had to have a vaginal swab when I went to the EPU after some bleeding a few weeks ago. Ive had a letter today saying I've tested positive for Group B Strep & will need an intravenous drip when in labour. Ive read on the NHS website about it as the letter offers little information. Is this something I should be concerned or 'prepared' for? I don't see my midwife now until July so thought I'd ask here - Thank you.

I too am in this situation. I have found it quite confusing as there are differing medical opinions. I've been put on a course of penicillin by my GP to try to clear the Strep B out and then will be re-tested for it, 4 weeks after finishing the antibiotics.

Perhaps make an appointment with your GP to chat over the options?

As an aside I saw my midwife on Wednesday and she didn't seem alarmed by the presence of Step B, just stuck the stickers on my file.

I was phoned by the Drs this morning & have been told there's been a prescription for antibiotics put in for me so perhaps that's why? No mention of a retest though. I'll have a word when I pick them up tomorrow.

As you've said, it's confusing especially when the initial letter offers very little information or advice.

Choco I had to go back to the Drs as the Amoxicillian they put me originally wasn't agreeing with me (think V&D). It was only at this subsequent appointment that the Dr mentioned retesting me.

I was gutted when i opened the letter! Like you say, no real info on it and i didn't see a Dr to get the original prescription. I hope you get to talk to someone about it.

I tested positive around 32 weeks with my first pregnancy and had antibiotics during labour.

Strep b during a normal pregnancy can come and go, which is why tests don't tend to happen til the latter end of the pregnancy as there's a chance you can pass it on to baby then.

I don't know that much but imagine if you are treated now they may still test later down the line
