Private Rooms in St Mary's

Does anyone know whether you can book a private room in St Mary's following giving birth there? Someone told me that you can do this in the Homerton for £50 a night. I'm interested in this option if I end up having a c-section and therefore have to stay longer than 1-2 nights.

Thanks

If its NHS then I think you can only request. I dont know about pirvate hospitals though

If you have a c-section though youwillprobably be given your own room anyway.

Are you talking about St MAry's Paddington????

I had DS there on the NHS, had a C-section. HIDEOUS HIDEOUS 4 days after wards on the post natal ward. couldn't move to a private room in the Lindo Wing (private bit) as it was full and you cant prebook. There is only i single room in the NHS bit.

peter jones is absolutely right.... i had dd at st marys, and although i can't fault the care i got throughout labour etc, the post natal wards were hideous, and the state of the loos and bathrooms etc totally revolting. I had to stay in for about 4-5 nights (can't quite remember now, lost in the mists of time) because dd went up to SCBU, and when she came down again (to the post natal wards), it was on the condition (of the SCBU doctors) that I was put in the only single room with her for the 1 night that I had to stay there with her for observation etc before I went home. Bliss, but no way you can request the room. Lindo Wing rooms available (at a LOT more than £50/night, more like £500 I think...?!) if they are free, but I don't think they come free very often, as the Lindo is a popular place to deliver privately.
I think they run similar systems at Chelsea and Westminster (though nothing would induce me to go there) and Queen Charlottes, maybe someone else has personal experience of either of those?
One last thing, my post natal ward at St Marys (I think we were 8?! Ugh...) had at least 3 cs mums there, so NO guarantee of getting the single room just because you have a section. The single room was occupied before me by a woman who had been transferred from another hospital with a 24 wk prem baby upstairs in SCBU/ICU...

Good luck!

Orangina I think you are me.....

BTW (I used to be AlexH) how are you getting on with Tariq Miskry?

nsl · 15/01/2007 11:13

I did mean St mary's paddington. I'm high risk so they're inducing me at 39 wks and therefore there's a high chance that I could end up with a c-sec. Guess I'll just have to try and avoid c-sec as long as possible and hope for the best.

On a positive not my csection was impeccable and the medical care is great. I will go back if I have another baby..............and agree re C&W. I could tell you stories that would make you hair curl..........

orangina · 15/01/2007 11:40

Hi AlexH! Getting on fine with Tariq Miskry, can't recommend him highly enough so far. Very nice, approachable, puts you at your ease, doesn't make me feel neurotic (which I think I am...!), not one of those patronising old buffers, and I've got 2+ weeks to go, and just trying to hold on until then, as I've got too many things to do to go into labour early! Going the private route, although very £££, is so reassuring. Don't intend to have any more after children this, and feel so much better knowing who is going manage delivery etc, and I know that when I turn up at the Lindo Wing, I won't get turned away, told I'm not in labour yet, or dumped in an open ward for hours, etc....

Would rather go ANYWHERE than C&W (we might also know the same stories PJ, definitely hair curling stuff...), and completely agree that St Marys care is great, SCBU was brilliant with dd, wanted to sign everything I owned over to them in my will, such was the gratitude etc....

orangina · 15/01/2007 11:43

NSL, if you are high risk, presumably you are being looked after by one of the consultants there (Teoh? Murphy?)... perhaps he can see if you can get the single room if you are sectioned in the end? Also, do you have any private health insurance? They don't cover pregnancy, but sometimes DO cover emergency c-sections by paying for a private room (I know that PPP does, depending on what policy you have...).... might be worth looking into...

PeterJones · 15/01/2007 11:43

We are going private next time for all the ame reasons. although (had a miscarriage in dec) when we found out the cost of it all we did breathe deeply.........

Good luck - and look forward to seeing the announcement. We too hope for i more and then are likely to stop (I am nearly 39 so we feel we are living on borrowed time although I am wistful about those with 3 or more..........

orangina · 15/01/2007 11:58

The cost is pretty breath taking, I must admit, and I didn't have the chance to compare consultants costs, as I jumped ship at 28 weeks and feel very lucky that Tariq Miskry was able to take me on at that stage. I suspect the Teoh's of this world come in more ££ than some of the others, but I don't know that for a fact.... Will let you know how I get on! The interesting thing is (so far), that I really enjoy seeing the same person each time, being seen on time, being able to discuss my concerns without feeling as though I'm wasting his/her time, love knowing that I'll have privacy and my own bathroom etc for the big day, plus knowing that my delivery will be managed by someone I trust and have discussed things with etc. BUT, it ALSO makes me realise that the NHS does provide an incredible service. Knowing how much we will be charged for each individual intervention (£x for an epidural, £x for a ventouse, £x for a forceps, £x for a c-s, £x for pre-labour monitoring etc) is a bit of an eye opener too...

Anyway, so sorry to hear about your mc in december. I hope you have another good pg and who knows, you might feel like going for #3 in your early 40s (plenty do...). I must admit, I feel wistful at the thought of my "old life" these days rather than 3 children, though obviously I wouldn't want it any other way...!

PeterJones · 15/01/2007 12:54

I'm going to regret posting this but........

I see Lesley Regan privately at the Lindo Wing (have done so for years due to crap insides). she was going to charge £5000 for prenatal care, £850 for the c-section (which I have to have) plus the aneasthetic fee plus the 4 day stay in the Lindo Wing......................

nsl · 15/01/2007 13:01

Don't answer if you don't want to, but how much is the 4 days stay?

A room on the private ward at St Thomas is 625quid a day - you are basically paying for the nursing care

50quid a night sounds more like a private room within the NHS ward so NHS nursing/facilities if you know what I mean
