Moses baskets - are they safe/any good?

We have been offered a m/basket, and (stoopid first timer question alert!) I don't know if they are suitable for newborns to sleep in all the time ie instead of a crib/cot?

I think I am asking as someone told me that cot bumpers can restrict air flow, and I am very, very alert to SIDS as we had a death in the family earlier this year. It seems that m/baskets look so small!

Clearly I don't know what I am talking about, so if anyone could give me any views/options here, I would be very grateful!!

I was put off them by the trouble some people have then getting their babies into a cot after outgrowing the basket.. popped both of mine straight into smaller than standard ikea cot and this has worked well both times!
pop them in feet to foot position and away you go!

Absolute waste of money! DD grew out of it within weeks. With DS we used a grobag in the usual cot and all was well.

you'll never know if u need one until baby comes along. dd never slept in it, (nor in cot or anywhere else apart from mums and dads chests), but once she finally started sleeping she was happy in it and had no trouble at all adjusting to the cot at 4 months.

A friend tried to just buy a cot, but after a few days admitted defeat and found that baby slept better in a cosier environment.....

we borrowed one, and we'll borrow it again for no2!!!

Perfectly safe (btw the thing about cot bumpers and airflow is rubbish - the 'risk' is that a baby might entangle themselves), but my ds hated his and wouldn't sleep in it at all (he was a rubbish sleeper anyway) so we went from our bed to cot - it was a lovely one too with a white pique surround and hood and so pretty. Gave it to a friend whose dd slept happily in it. I'd say beg or borrow if you can.
