cos you might wear ones that are too small and constrict your breast growth apparently

where did you get underwired nursing bras, or is that a typo in the thread title?

RedC · 11/01/2007 17:36

I was told not to use underwire as, unless it fits you perfectly, it can put pressure on your breast tissue and lead to damaged/blocked milk ducts.

lulu25 · 11/01/2007 17:38

oh and (according to the staff of bravissimo at least) the problem with wearing underwired bras is that so many people wear bras that don't fit properly - if you get regularly fitted you should be fine. i finally gave up my precious underwires at 18 weeks and that was because i was having problems with my back - nothing to do with boobs. can't wait to get back into proper bras that don't flop out disgustingly at the sides (hence my question)

I think I know the answer to this today, as I now have a really sore (red raw sore) patch high up on the right hand side of my bump where the wire is rubbing It hurts!!!!

if they are available to buy then that means that they are probably okay to wear, oh and so much more supportive, I wish I had known such things existed when i was bf'ing, big boobs and no underwiring is not exactly a pleasure, s'pose it is a matter of getting a good fit

Must fit well, but this is true of all bras during pg and while breastfeeding.

I tried to research this when pregnant and could find no medical/nursing literature about underwired bras damaging the breast during pregnancy - suspect it's one of those "common sense" things that has little basis in fact.

There is advice not to wear underwired bras on a lot of the pregnancy websites but nothing referenced (which always irritates me a bit).

I know I'd have been far less comfortable in a softcup bra.

CanStarveWillStarve · 11/01/2007 18:52

No reason at all not to wear them, as long as they fit well and aren't too tight. I wore one throughout my pregnancy, and have had no problem with my milk ducts - still bf'ing at 11 months.

What a shame that nursing bra doesn't come in a big enough cup size for me, or I'd love to have one.

me neither but thanks tutter for the link

I have worked in maternity and in lingerie, so I know far too much about this kind of thing!

Basically, underwire bras are okay to wear until your milk comes in. Most people will wear underwire throughout the pregnancy, but nursing bras should be non-underwire. There's not really a HARM in wearing underwire at any time, except to your comfort. The wires will block your milk ducts, which is VERY painful, and you would have to ice/heat/massage the blockages. Why would you want to do that to yourself??

I've heard that once you learn your nursing schedule (6-10 weeks after birth), it's okay to go back to underwires... but I dont know that I would even want to risk that!
