Anyone been treated for a UTI?

I had a scare last week and ended up in hospital -turned out to be a UTI and I'm now on a course of antibiotics (Amoxycillin). Am so paranoid about taking anything when pregnant. Has anyone else been treated for this? I really need reassurance that it won't hurt my baby. Really anxious. Thanks, Dinny

Thanks, Twiglett.

I had a premature labour with dd1 so I suppose it is necessary to get rid of UTI. Goes against all your instincts to take it though, doesn't it?

Glad your dd is healthy and happy. Congratulations

I had tonsilitis when 14-16 weeks preg with ds and had to have erythrimycin which terrified me so early on. He's fine!

Dinny - I have had 4 courses of antibiotics so far this pregnancy. I asked about this too. I was assured that things would be fine. The last 2 courses have been Cephalexin (sp?)... high doses of it too as I was taken to hospital at 24 wks with suspected premature labour. Like you it was put down to a UTI.

I had 2 courses of AB's whilst pg with ds. One for a UTI, the other for a chest infection. He turned out just fine too.

Incidentally - My 1st course this pregnancy was when I was only 4-5 wks.... I am plagued with UTI's.

Think I am prone to them too, Toothache. And now I will probably get thrush from the antibios. Still, better than premature labour.
Cramps were so painful - were yours? D x

Hi!
All the medicine in the penicillin group (amoxicillin is one) are reported to be safe to take during pregnancy.
Try to prevent more infections by drinking more fliuds. An infection caught at the early stages can sometimes be flushed out with fliuds.
To prevent the thrush take natural yoghurt to top up your 'good bacteria'. Also very soothing to apply to the area if it's too late!
Hope this helps
x

Dinny - They were VERY painful... and coming in waves too. I have had lots of UTI's during pregnancy and other times too, but it seemed this particular infection was causing my uterus to contract. I was timing the pains and they were 4 minutes apart for an hour.... that's when the ambulance was sent for. The pains lasted another 12hrs after that, then just stopped! Very odd.

The usual UTI pains I get are sharp shooting pains really low in my abdomen when I stand up/sneeze/turn around quickly and a constant ache in my back. This wasn't either, but was still attirbuted to a UTI.... although I'm not convinced.

Samcj - Don't know what it is about me and pregnancy, but not even drinking gallons of water seems to prevent them. I am beginning to think it's not UTI's at all.

Might be telling you stuff you already know, but just in case....

Try drinking cranberry juice. That seems to work well at the early signs. It's quite sharp, but you can get it mixed with other fruit juices, or just mix it yourself when pouring it out. It makes me pee more though so make sure you drink tonnes of water (you should aim for at 4 litres of water a day, more in hot weather or if you have exercised or something).

And be very careful when wiping, front to back, and moist tissue/baby wipes are good for ensuring no germs left.

And G strings are a no-no, as are synthetic knickers or tight synthetic trousers, and tights. Cotton normal knickers are your best bet. There are actually alot of cute big pants out there these days - apparently it's got more trendy.
