Had nasty 3rd degree tear in my first pregnancy and was told by two doctors who examined me afterwards that they would stongly advise a c section next time.

Had second consultant appointment yesterday and saw a different registar from last time.

Registar last time was lovely and said fine to have a c section this time and he would book a date in at yesterdays appointment to put my mind at rest as I was getting stressy. He put this in writing in a letter.

Registar yesterday was horrible and she said I was making a fuss over nothing and there was no reson whatsoever that I should not have a vaginal birth. When I showed her the letter agreeing to a c section she got all huffy and said a c section should not have been agreed and the consultant could well refuse me on the day.

Insisted on seeing the consultant there and then who has agreed to honour a c section and booked a date but I was shocked that she told me that most consultants would have refused. The hospital I go to is a teaching hospital and is normally very forward thinking.

I still have a few more consultants appointments to go before the birth and I am dreading going as I just think I am going to have a huge battle at every appointment.

I know there is only a small risk of another bad tear (about 10%) and a smaller risk of having to use a colostomy bag for the rest of my life (2%) but I can't understand why, if there is any risk, however small, the decision can't be left to the mother.

Sorry, just wanted to let off steam.

I would refuse to see her again.

I would also complain about her in writing.

The decision IS the mother's.

expatinscotland · 11/01/2007 10:01

Also, three consultants have already advised csection.

belgo · 11/01/2007 10:02

incy, just out of interest, where did you find the statistic on the colostomy bag?

incy · 11/01/2007 10:06

Expact, thanks for that I am going to complain as I was in tears (pregnancy hormones and all !).

Belgo, was told this by the first doctor who saw me post birth . Not sure where the data was from but he seemed to know what he was talking about.

I would honestly 'express my concerns' in writing.

She may not realise she's being unprofessional.

Also, it's NOT her vagina, is it?

incy · 11/01/2007 10:15

I think she thought I was a 'too posh to push' type.

Flipping cheek.

shouldn't have treated you like this. The registrar is lower down in the doc level than the consultant - wonder if her manner annoyed them as well.

expatinscotland · 11/01/2007 10:28

I would 'express my concern' that she may be letting her personal beliefs and character assessments affect her professional judgement.

incy · 11/01/2007 10:53

Thanks expat feel a bit better now - began to wonder if pregnancy hormones had sent me mad...

thats awful, why cant they just effing respect the wishes of the mum. i blame posh spice etc for the too posh to push bollocks. with ds i was HUGE and im a tiny dot (5"2, size 6) i measured 42w at 38w and when i asked for a cs or at least a scan to check his size i was told that "childbirth is hard work, thats why its called labour. women have been doing this centuries etc" what they forget is that 20-30y ago a huge % of women would have died in labour
they nearly lost both of us 3 times and i had a crash cs ds was 9lb2

belgo · 11/01/2007 11:34

Incy - I hope you find a doctor who is sympathatic. I can't see how they think you are 'too posh to push' if you have already given birth.

lulumama · 11/01/2007 11:55

thread about 4th degree tears with some good links....

lulumama · 11/01/2007 11:56

this one is about 3rd and 4th degree tears too

incy · 11/01/2007 15:54

Thanks everyone. The consultant has agreed to and booked in a section but it was such a battle and I don't see why it should have to be. I genuniely would prefer to have two natural deliverys but I can't risk another tear and all the horrible after effects. Horrible registar. Bet she's never had a third degree tear !

Incy, how horrible.

I wanted c section after v traumatic birth, and registrar got really sniffy with me as well! Who the do they think they are?

Then saw consultant who was absolutely fine about it no probs at all, in fact very very supportive!

I would complain, as it appears she was trying to force HER views onto you!

Why has it posted twice?!!

incy · 11/01/2007 17:19

Yes Fizzbuzz I agree that some people have very strong views on birth - I do think we should be able to make up our own minds.

Sorry to hear you had similar problems -has put me off hospitals for life.
