Im nearly 5 weeks and already so tempted to shop! Want to but unisex vests etc. And thinking of starting a basket of shampoo, wipes & things like that? Going to be moving house and going on holiday whilst pregnant so dont want to start too late and if anything were to happen id still be ttc again so could keep items? Wont be purchasing any big items yet though!

Once I found myself pregnant I allowed myself to buy
(1) anything I saw that I truly loved - so anything Id be gutted if it sold out before 20weeks
(2) anything id need in bulk id allow myself to buy little and often - nappies and wipes etc.

lorribaby · 25/04/2016 22:23

Only thing I would say I stock piled pampers nappies only to discover they brought my daughter out in a rash and had to give them all away. Now use aldi nappies which are fantastic!! Oh and the price is unbelievable for them to! Water wipes are a safe bet but are a little expensive.

I had my 20 week scan on Friday and I have bought literally nothing, except a few bits if maternity clothing. I haven't even started looking. I have been given some other maternity clothes, a beautiful teddy, a bouncy chair, play mat, some vests, sleep suit and baby sleeping bags, some new and most second hand by excited friends and family.
I really need to get my head around the arrival of an actual baby - maybe a visit to mothercare will help that!

ALongTimeComing · 26/04/2016 07:01

I waited until 20 weeks before I bought anything. If you want to prepare I would get your house in line. Thoroughly gut everywhere. Chuck out absolutely nothing you don't need because you are about the be completely inundated with baby stuff. Now, now my baby is over a year, we are having a complete gut out and is horrifying how much stuff is in our house. Oh, and babies don't need shampoo. We were gifted one of those big Johnsons monstrosity boxes and it just sits and sits. Haven't used any of it.

MyBreadIsEggy · 26/04/2016 07:10

I bought a single pack of unisex vests after my 12 week scan with DD, and then went all out on a pink bonanza after the 20 week scan and knew we were expecting a girl!
I have a second dating scan for this pregnancy this morning but won't be buying anything until 20 weeks and we can find out the sex - need to know what new "boy" things I might need to buy or what I can use again ie. The mountain of DD's clothes that I haven't got rid of just in case it's another girl!

I know this sounds a bit boring sensible, but how about making a savings account alongside having an Amazon (or other) wishlist and when you see something you love, put the money aside? You watch your money grow (lots of banking apps have quick/easy ways to add an "impulse saver" or similar) even if it's just a few pounds at a time and you get to imagine all the things you are going to buy without necessarily filling your house up/ending up with duplicates when people buy or pass down things! Plus buy something small now too, a teddy or little hat (socks!!) to keep you going Wink
That said, I'm 38 weeks now and actually struggled to buy things for a long time - when I was already in my 3rd trimester I stood in front of the plain sleepsuits in John Lewis for an hour before I chose one multipack Confused I have bought a few things bit by bit now and am surprised when I realise I'm (finally!!) almost ready!

Afreshstartplease · 26/04/2016 10:14

I'm 14+6

So far I have bought

Two packs unisex sleep suits on sale in next
Perfect prep machine reduced on Amazon

And that's all

I'm having another scan at 16 weeks and finding out gender so that's when I'll really start

seafoodeatit · 26/04/2016 11:55

Whenever you feel comfortable! I waited until our 12 week scan to start buying things but didn't order any of the big things until I reached 24 weeks.

KeyboardMum · 26/04/2016 16:46

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

We have only just started shopping for stuff like clothes and I'm 28 weeks! We did, however, manage to sensibly purchase the cot and nursery furniture whilst it was on sale around Christmas time, which saved us around £1000.

I think that it's a good idea now to look out for any deals floating around, so that you don't end up pressure purchasing everything later. You should also get some nice vouchers and magazines with your maternity pack from the NHS once you have discussed everything with your midwife.

I'd also recommend joining the Boots parenting club - there's loads of good deals available if you're itching to start splashing ;)

Bejeena · 26/04/2016 16:54

If you are moving house then wait until after the move, when you have enough stuff of your own to pack up and move the last thing you will want to do is pack up stuff for the unborn baby as well. I haven't bought anything this time as is my second buy first time we started to organise ourselves at about 25 weeks

TheCrumpettyTree · 26/04/2016 16:57

Can I recommend Nct sales as a great place for clothes, toys and some equipment. Apart from mattresses and car seats obviously.

MeDownSouth · 26/04/2016 17:05

I'm 15+4 and bought a set of 2 bibs this morning cause they were so cute and the last one in the sale (it got me all excited!). OH has banned me from looking at anything as he said it's way too early. We're hoping to move soon (if it ever goes through) too so I don't want to have to move stuff. Luckily my mum and dad still have my cot and pram so we're hoping to only need to get new mattresses. I don't think we'll need anything else big.

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 27/04/2016 08:50

I didn't buy anything until I was well over 30 weeks

Oysterbabe · 27/04/2016 09:33

I didn't really start shopping until 30 weeks. I was just thinking about how sad it would be if something went wrong. It's easy to say you'd keep trying and use the stuff for a subsequent baby but you don't know how you'd feel. Wouldn't it be upsetting to see your little one in a babygrow and think That should be on the baby I lost?
It's very, very early. There's no hurry. You can get everything you need in one day of online shopping and have it delivered the next day. I agree with starting to put some money aside, making an Amazon wish list then waiting until after 20 weeks when you know you're carrying a viable baby.

Oysterbabe · 27/04/2016 09:36

(Oh yes and also people gave us so much stuff that she's outgrown some things before she'd even had chance to wear them)

stripeyorangesocks71 · 27/04/2016 09:48

Me and my partner had this conversation yesterday when walking around the supermarket! We agreed it would be best to wait until after the first scan and then start adding a few little bits to the weekly shops (nappies/wipes/etc) so it isn't such a huge hit. As for big items.. I am not sure yet! It is all very new to me, but I know I can't wait to be a mum!

sianihedgehog · 27/04/2016 10:13

Depends on how you'll feel if you miscarry. 1 in 5 pregnancies miscarries before 12 weeks, so it's really something that you have to keep in mind. I bought a couple of little things at about 8 weeks with my first pregnancy and miscarried at 11 weeks. I didn't regret buying stuff at all, though, I just put it away in a sad box, and got it back out when I was pregnant again. I have happy memories of the excitement of buying those things.

Snowberry86 · 28/04/2016 21:48

I bought a comforter after our 12 week scan. I've had 2 miscarriages before 12 weeks and so never got to the scan stage.

Once I had seen baby I wanted to buy something so it had a possession. Seems daft but if anything happened I wanted something to save and keep with the scan photos to remember this baby.

Not buying anything else until much later on though.

MrsPickwick · 29/04/2016 08:08

It took me three years to get pregnant and I never thought it would happen. Infertility was one of the hardest experiences of my life. So after my surprise BFP, my instinctive reaction was to enjoy the pregnancy - and enjoy buying stuff. For me it was a way of putting all the heartache behind me and saying a big 'fuck you' to infertility. I didn't want the infertile years to get their claws around the pregnancy too.

I bought a lovely romper on the day of my BFP. A few more token items after our private 8 week viability scan. And since the 12 week scan, we've bought plenty of clothes and cloth nappies, and a bargain Moses basket and stand, etc.

I'm now 18 weeks and am delaying and big purchases till third tri. In the meantime I'm still enjoying picking up the little things - in various sizes, not just 0-3m. DH and I said from the very beginning that if something were to go wrong, the fact that we'd bought stuff already would not make us feel any worse. We'd already feel as bad as it was possible to feel, and a charity box of babygrows wouldn't change that.

I do understand why those who have experienced mcs would wait though, totally.

PinkParsnips · 29/04/2016 08:18

Personally I would wait until at least the 12 week scan but that's just me, if you're dying to buy something just do it! Smile

I have my 20 week scan next week and haven't bought anything yet although this is DC2 so we have a lot already. I'll probably buy bits and bobs from next week then big items after about 30 weeks, partly because we had a scare at the 12 week scan so I still haven't quite got my head around things being OK and partly because we have nowhere to put it all yet!
