Antenatal Class Information Page

NotQuiteCockney · 10/01/2007 17:36

I organise antenatal classes. I've got bored of C+Ping information from email to email, so am setting up some info pages for the mums who email me.

So far, I've got:

  • antenatal exercise in and around our borough
  • meeting other mums
  • birth options (home birth, birth centre, independent midwives and doulas)
  • how booking classes works
  • breastfeeding support

What other information would be useful to pregnant mums?

Hmmm, not sure I'm linking to here. The line between rl me and nqc me is already a bit faint, tbh!

Well, I might. But I'd feel better doing MN and a few others, but who?

I am linking to kellymom, and two other bf sites that were recommended to me, one of which is even British ...

I know, I know, but they're all scary.

I don't feel comfortable just pushing MN, not least because there are enough of the NCT bods who know who I am on here (e.g. our newsletter editor is someone I met on here, whoops). But I couldn't in good conscience push somewhere with tickers.

Someone on another thread was trying to talk about how much she's not enjoying motherhood on the "Huggies" board (?) and was told it was inapproprate .

i have a link to mumsnet on my website

would like to know more about the classes..do you teach them ? am thinking of training as an antenatal teacher.....

lulumama · 11/01/2007 19:15

AIMS

doula uk

homebirth.org

birthtraumaassocitaion.org

and ante & post natal depression sites

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2007 19:52

AIMS is the association of independent midwives? Got it.

Got the doulas.

Homebirth.org is a good idea.

I'm not sure I want to get into birth trauma and postnatal depression on here - it's a site for people who are about to take antenatal classes, iyswim.

I organise NCT classes, I don't teach. The training is very long, and as I've never had a natural birth, training other people to have them would just drive me mad.

OP posts:
lulumama · 11/01/2007 20:07

AIMS is association for improvement in maternity services...good people to contact if you have trouble getting home birth etc....or are being pushed for induction etc...

ante natal depression is one of those things that few people readily discuss, and might be worth acknowledging ?

anyhoo...thanks for that re the classes ! x

NotQuiteCockney · 11/01/2007 22:03

Hmmm, yes, antenatal depression might be worthwhile. Will look at AIMS, too.

Have somehow segued into probably doing page with local listings for new mums, too, so we can stop printing it all in the newsletter every quarter.

Oh, if you're considering training as an NCT teacher, you might want to talk to Harpsi. I think she's nearly at the end of her training, and (in theory) might come teach for me sometime.

i have and the NCT head office....not terribly forthcoming ....

NotQuiteCockney · 12/01/2007 11:05

Oooh, giraffeski, where are you located? Are daytrips to Tower Hamlets an option when you qualify?

lulumama, I'm surprised your local branch isn't more useful, we're always short of trainees. Maybe they have lots of teachers there? I'd get to know your local branch, maybe attend a committee meeting, or take on a committee job?

Although, of course, the Coming Changes I guess mean local branches will be less interested in training people?

NCQ-- i am a member of the local NCT, they have NO teacher at present and are currently training one......i have phoned and emailed head office ! and no reply !

i have been to a committee meeting recently and am helping organise a baby day at the local hospital, i also run a weekly mums and tots group!!

so i am really quite involved !

giraffe.. i am in merseyside ... what are these coming changes and pilot schemes ??

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2007 14:41

Oooh, giraffeski, I'd be interested in talking to you about how it's going. I'm reasonably happy about the centralisation, as I don't want this job forever ...

Lulumama, don't you just need the support of your branch to train?

(We have nobody training in our branch. We keep trying to find potential trainees, and not getting any.)

branch told me to contact head office !

pattilou · 13/01/2007 19:01

I run 2-day ante-natal courses (London and S. Wales) that are very different from NCT and NHS classes. Rather than looking at the birth or the practicalities of motherhood, these are all about the emotional challenges of becoming a mother, which is something that many of my clients tell me they wish they'd prepared for before they had their babies (I'm a life coach for mothers, and work with lots of MNers). More details here

Hope no one minds me posting this on here (have also paid for a post in the classifieds section, so am not being too cheeky). Not trying to steal your thunder, NQC - I don't think we'll be overlapping.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2007 19:38

That's interesting to hear about pattilou. My job is voluntary, anyway, so I'm not exactly threatened by other antenatal teachers! (And I do refer my overflow to an NCT-trained teacher who teaches independently in the next borough.)

(Your website is a bit buggy, btw - I seem to have to click on the sidebar menu options twice to get them to load ...)

How do you promote your courses, other than on here? I'd think advertising in the appropriate NCT newsletters would be a good idea ...

Hiya NQC,
Can you possibly email me on
[email protected] or CAT me. I've got some questions about the NCT.
Thanks

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2007 20:11

Have emailed you. I may not know the answer, but I will try.

OP posts:
mrspink27 · 13/01/2007 20:13

book list?

pattilou · 13/01/2007 20:19

NQC, good idea about the NCT newsletters. Any idea how I get in touch with them?

The thing with the sidebar is because of the flash that's used for that part of the site - apparently some internet explorers can only doubleclick on the flash. It's strange - but it won't have done you any harm!

So far the only advert I've run is on MN, though I've done interviews on various online radio stations, and issued press releases, etc. Thinking of advertising in some pregnancy publications, (and just missed the deadline for Families magazine) but it can be expensive. So word of mouth is my greatest asset. Just a question of letting people know who I am and what I do. So... any expectant mothers in London who want to get to grips with these v. important issues - you know where to come!
