Swimming at 39 weeks?

Hi. I am roughly 39 weeks pregnant, on maternity leave and incredibly bored!!!

I have always been really active, and really fancy going swimming (which I have been doing on and off during pregnancy anyway).

So, is it ok for me to go swimming at this late stage? I can't bear the idea that, if baby is late, I need to stay inactive for the next few weeks...

definitely keep going as long as you can, and as long as it's not uncomfortable. I used to walk up and down the pool towards the end. With DS1 I was still in the water 3 hours before labour began...!

Avoid breast stroke though as it can make your hips uncomfortable, as they'll be all loosened up for birth...

Sorry if this has already been said, I haven't read the whole thread...

Good luck with the baby!

Believe me - if swimming brought on labour wouldn't have still been pregnant at 42 weeks !

I swam up to 40+4 twice a week and towards the end it was more floating on back , gentle kicking and doggy paddle. Agree re comments on breaststroke was not advised as I did classes specifically for pregnant mums to be.
Hope it all goes well with the birth

I swam right up to the end. I can still remember the glorious feeling of weighlessness (I put on 4 stone with baby), its just getting out that you have to be careful of. Make someone swim with you and help you out. Don't slip on the tiles and enjoy!

Ooh I loved that feeling when you got in the water. But I was never able to swim in the same way with that huge bump underneath me in the water. The best I ever managed was to bob around on a woggle.

I swam every week until DS was born and even went 10pin bowling 4 days before the birth! I think its so much better to keep active if you can. Good luck!

39 weeks and swimming 1.5-1.7 km a week in one go. Weightlessness is awesome, staying active is rewarding, boring maternity leave time passing is worth it. Just doing free style with 10-15 sec of resting after every lap; also read that breast strokes may not be good for the hip which is now with the baby inside. Baby would not kick or move in earlier weeks but now she does. Have cycled every dayish until completing 7. Month and since then swimming once a week and walking else.
