Cervical Stitch...

Hi all, in the last 4 years I have had to ops to remove part of my cervix for high grade pre cancerous cells. My gynaecologist said that I would need a cervical stitch put in at 16 weeks (I'm 4+5 now). Has anyone had any experience with this as I'm freaking myself looking at Google!

Yes you will need one or your cervix won't be able to hold together and keep the baby in . It's a straightforward operation under general anaesthetic and a day's recovery in hospital . You need to book it as soon as possible .

Thank you for your replies. I have an appointment on Tuesday with gynaecologist so guessing she will get that booked in. I really need to stop googling!

Most recent one a month ago. Was offered a spinal anestetic but said I wanted general. Went to theatre at 8.30am was home by 12.
It's a bit period painy for a week or so but paracetamol fixed that.
It'll be removed as last time at 37 weeks it's done just like an internal exam without anestetic but doesn't hurt.

How many weeks pregnant were you when you had it and did you need any time off work? X

I was 14 weeks it's usually put in between 14 and 16 if it's planned.
I'm a sahm but if I worked I would have probably taken the day of surgery and the following day off and been fine.
I have a one year old to run around after as was fine after 24hrs just mild period type pains every so often.
Now I forget it's there no pain or discomfort at all.

I've had 2 as well - both put in about 14 weeks and removed about 36. DS1 came at 40 weeks and DS2 had to be induced! But I'd much rather have gone through it all for no reason than risk losing either of them. It's scary but pretty straightforward I had a spinal first time and general second - both have downsides but I'd probably go for a general again as I wigged out a bit with the spinal (to clarify I won't go for either again as I'm not having any more babies!). I started a thread called the 'short cervix club' which I think has fallen out of use now but if you search for it there were loads of people sharing experiences and it might be useful. Hello, may I join this thread? So glad I found it as I am also wondering if I will need a cervical stitch. I had a large amount of my cervix removed when I was younger (after a positive smear) and remember my Gynae said my cervix is flush with my V and I would probably need a stitch if I got pregnant. I'm only 5 weeks so will see how I get on and book something for week 14 assuming everything is going swimmingly... Heading to the other post you mentioned, thank you

Hope you don't mind me joining. Dixxie it sounds like we're in a very similar place. I'll also have a look for the short cervix club. I had treatment following smears twice when I was younger. I went to my gp about a year ago before we started ttc and they did a scan to measure my cervix. Came out at about 2cm (4-5cm is the norm). So they said once I got pregnant I would be referred and monitored.

My biggest concern is that they will wait and see before treatment and something could go wrong but I think it's likely I'll be offered a stitch. Plus it's taken us 15 months to get pregnant which makes me more anxious generally. We have just recently started fertility investigations so bfp came as quite a shock!

I'm 5 weeks today and currently on holiday so will schedule an appointment when I get back.

I had an emergency stitch put in last month at 22 weeks due to cervical shortening. All done under general anaesthetic and I could have gone home after 48 hours except I was having lots of cramping and spotting so stayed in until it calmed down. No issues with it since, though am on a sex ban which isn't so much fun

I have posted on another thread about this but I had to have a cervical stitch put in at 13.5 weeks due to a loss at 20 weeks last year. I ended up going private with Dr Gibb and had a high shirodkar stitch put in at the Portland. A few people on the NHS specialise in this too, Nick Wales maybe? I had a GA and I had a bit of bleeding and discharge for a few weeks. I am now 22 weeks and doing well. I had quite a bit of pain around 18-20 weeks due to ligament stretching etc which can be made worse by having a stitch (apparently!). I am pretty much on pelvic rest, no exercise but I still work fulltime (desk bound). I am also monitored by my NHS consultant every 2 weeks. Feel free to ask any questions! Also, I quickly realised Google was not my friend when searching for answers to symptoms, stitch success/failure stories etc!! :-)

I'm a primary school teacher and am curious about if I'd be able to continue after a stitch. I'm on my feet all day. Anyone else in similar circumstances?

Littlemissalwayshungry - so we are in exactly the same position, I'm just over 5 weeks . I have exactly the same fears about them not acting fast enough. I'm going to push the NHS at 10 weeks to book it in early, and if really necessary I'll get a private consultant for a second opinion. Just not willing to take any risks. 22 weeks sounds late and I'd be worrying all the time...

I am freaking out a bit. I don't trust the NHS but I don't have money to burn on private. Right now at nearly 6 weeks, first baby age 43 after 1 MC, I just want to be reassured by my 7 and 12 week scans and tests. I went to see the doctor and she made me feel stupid for even being there so early, just said see the midwife @ 10 weeks. How do I book a cervical stitch, when and with who? I was seeing an NHS Gynae (he literally just retired) so do I call that team? (LittleMiss - thanks for your PM, it doesn't work on iPhone app but good idea and I'll find a way to reply)

I was told to get my gp to refer me to an obs and gyne consultant. I saw my gp last week and he said he'd send the referral and to wait for the consultant to contact me...

I had two lletz procedures in 2014. My gynaecologist said at the time that it was likely I would need a stitch in pregnancy. I'm pregnant with my first child at the moment. I had a cervical length scan at 16 weeks, and my cervix was found to be just on the shorter side of the borderline for intervention.

The obstetric consultant advised progesterone pessaries and weekly scans: I carried on having scans until 20 weeks, and it was found that my cervix had lengthened sufficiently to put it into the normal range. The consultant discharged me, but I'm staying on the pessaries until 34 weeks. I'm almost 31 weeks now, and touch wood, everything has been fine so far.

I think the key is to push for a cervical scan as early as possible: I'd have liked one at 14 weeks really. Good luck!

I feel quite lucky that they referred me for a scan when we started ttc so that we have a baseline. They said as soon as I'm pregnant they'll refer me back to gynaecology. So I'm hoping to get a gp appointment for the next couple of weeks.

However I do remember the gynaecologist I saw last time said they would never do anything (and I think that includes checking cervix length ) until at least 12 weeks. I think it may mean that they need to be aware at 12 week scan and they check then. Or 12 week scan is done slightly differently with gynaecologist?
