Marginally low platelets at 9 weeks - consultant?

I have just had my booking in appointment at 9 weeks (DC3). First two DC were straightforward without complications.

My platelets at booking in were marginally low - 146,000 as opposed to 150,000 which is the cut off for normal. I understand that this is still above the level which would impact on birth options and give rise to concerns.

The midwife has automatically referred me to a consultant based on this result. I asked for a retest of platelets first but no response on this.

My feeling is that the consultant referral is box ticking by the midwife - I don't see that at this stage the midwife / consultant would do anything other than continue to monitor my platelets.

Has anyone any experience?

I am minded to refuse the consultant appointment at this stage - the hospital is a pain to get to with two young DC. That said, if the consultant would alter my treatment I would be happy to attend.

Sorry to hear your blood tests weren't ideal - it's a pain! However, the midwife was absolutely right to refer you. Midwives only deal in 'normal' and a low platelet count isn't normal - I'd rather be safe than sorry and see the consultant for more information on what low platelets could mean for you. It may be that after a few blood tests in the future with normal platelets you'll be referred back to midwife-led care!

I have also been referred to a consultant for low platelets. They were 142 at my booking in appointment. Apparently 150 is the minimum considered as a normal level for non-pregnant people, but for pregnant people it is 140.

I have to have blood tests every 4 weeks and consultant appointments. Three consultant appointments later, my platelets have continued to drop but they say it's not a concern unless they drop below 100. If that happens, blood tests will then become every 2 weeks. I've been told that it is only if they drop below 80 hat it has an impact on birth (would prevent an epidural apparently).

If I were you, i would go to the consultant appointment for peace of mind. I'd much rather be over monitored and know what's happening than not.
