Eight weeks pregnant - horrendous diet

Hi,

Anyone else really struggling with food at the moment? Nothing tastes right and the only things I can stomach are

  1. white bread toast with salted butter
  2. cocopops ( Hmm haven't had these for YEARS until the last week or so)
  3. lemon squash
  4. fighting a daily craving for take away chips

I haven't had morning sickness, just near constant nausea which peaks from 4pm to 11pm. I'm managing to keep my pregnancy vitamins down too which helps, but I'm really annoyed at myself for only eating utter shite - my poor nutrient deprived baby Sad

I've tried everything from tempting myself with treats to forcing fruit and veg down and nothing's helping!

Any ideas? Hoping this wears off quickly!

For the first trimester all I could stomach was cereal, milk, yogurt, prunes and olives, as well as sweet and salty popcorn.

Now I'm 15 weeks I can pretty much eat normally again, although not a lot at one time.

My job entails telling people how to eat healthily. I have so far, in my first 10 weeks of pregnancy, eaten Burger King, Sainsbury meat pastries, bread every day, less veg than ever and I'm eating so much more than usual because it's the only way I stop feeling nauseous. I really hope it calms down soon because I'm going to be huge at this rate.

missybct · 06/04/2016 09:38

Ah the famous carb diet.

I lived off McDonalds, cheese, crackers, crisps, bread and butter, more crisps, cups of decaff tea, anything with white carbs in at least until 11 weeks. I tried so hard to eat "healthily" but when the mere thought of your weekly stir fry makes you want to hurl, you know the white toast and beans will serve you better.

To be honest, I'm 15 weeks today and I still fancy carbs most of the time, but I've been able to introduce a bit more into my diet.

If it helps, I've gained 6lbs (stomach - wind and bump) but I've lost weight nearly everywhere else!

MyBreadIsEggy · 06/04/2016 09:41

I've had raging morning sickness in both pregnancies, and have survived on white toast, Diet Coke, mini cheddars and chicken katsu curry from wagamama Blush my midwife said I just have to eat whatever I can stomach and then worry about having a good diet once I don't feel sick Smile

northdownmummy · 06/04/2016 09:42

Try not to worry too much, the baby will take all the nutrients it needs from you. You might end up run down but this should improve when the sickness eases, for me this was 15 weeks.
My survival tactic was to never allow myself to get hungry. I lived on digestives and mini cheddars.

mermaid this made my laugh so much, thank you. Can we all seriously believe that Gwyneth P etc actually kept macrobiotic and wheatgrass whatever in their first trimesters? I'd love to read about an A Lister fessing up to her own week eight horrendous diet.

MrBensMrs · 06/04/2016 10:10

I had almost identical to you - nausea would come on afternoon and evening and could only stomach carbs and crap :(

I have definitely put on weight in the first trimester but I am now over 13 weeks and it's easing off, so hoping to go back to being more healthy soon - don't beat yourself up x

Snowberry86 · 06/04/2016 10:18

Ive been paranoid I'm not getting enough food in, especially nutritious food so its good to hear others are the same.

I'm almost on week 11 and have felt constantly sick since week 7. I have only been sick once during week 8 but have felt horrendous all the time.

All I can stomach is plain crisps, cereal and toast with jam.

Really hoping it stops soon, fed up of feeling so rotten and going on holiday for a few days next week.

MetalMidget · 06/04/2016 10:55

I completely went off chocolate and sweet things in the first trimester, and my appetite was right down. But salt, delicious, delicious salt... still really fancy massively salty things!

Whitelisbon · 06/04/2016 11:29

If it helps any of you feel better, I lived off McDonald's, crisps, fanta, toasties and Jaffa cakes during my last but one pregnancy, from about 6 weeks until the very end. I now have very healthy 2.5 yo twins, who will both eat almost anything.

I just had apple slices with peanut butter which seemed to satisfy my carb/salt cravings and not upset my nausea while still being vaguely healthy... trying to balance out that entire tube of Pringles from yesterday! Confused

Biscuitsforbribes · 06/04/2016 16:48

I've just wolfed toasted crumpets with a chaser of three lemon French fancies.. Embracing the carbs!

I attempted homemade vegetable soup at lunch. Hahahahaha. Worst idea ever!

biscuits you're a heroine -- great work. I felt the energy to Do Something today so embraced it and errr went to get some more recycling bags from the council. So exhausted by the effort I had to have a massive cookie on the way home.

economymode · 06/04/2016 17:07

Oh God, I hear you.

I'm 8 weeks today and have constant nausea and exhaustion. All I can stomach are carbs. I usually eat really healthily, but now it's zero fruit and veg - unless it's in some sauce - and just stodgy carbs. Toast and marmite, weetabix, rice crispies, shreddies, biscuits, sweets to suck, pizza...I remember going through the same with my other pregnancies. Can't remember when exactly I could stomach fresh fruit and veg again.

Even finding it hard to.prepare fruit and veg for the kids. They're living it though - pizza express for lunch the other day, lots of toasties, beans on toast, chips and veggie hot dogs with some cherry tomatoes for lunch today. Health visitor would have a fit!

primarynoodle · 06/04/2016 18:58

I was all carbs first trimester and by 20 weeks id put on 1.5 stone... im now 26 weeks and have lost a couple of pounds because baby leaves no room for my stomach!

Itll all even out in the end! Take the preg vitamins and ride it out until you can stomach natural food again!

LittleLionMansMummy · 06/04/2016 19:26

Haha I hear you! I'm all about the crackers and taramasalata and loving carbs but trying desperately to stomach protein. I just don't know what I feel like eating, only a few things are appetising. I've actually found fruit surprisingly good - bananas seem more appealing than they were to me pre-pregnancy. I like the sharpness of fruit, the taste cuts through the icky blandness of everything else.

29redshoes · 06/04/2016 19:33

Happened to me too. I think first priority is just to eat and drink anything you can stomach, to stop yourself getting weak and dehydrated. Anything with actual nutrients is a bonus.

I managed to get a pregnancy multivitamin in most days. On the days where I couldn't even force that down, I just took folic acid and vitamin d as those pills are tiny.

For me it got much better after the first trimester, hope it's the same for you!

Anyone know why this happens to so many women in pregnancy? Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense from a biological perspective, surely our bodies should crave healthy food?!

primarynoodle · 06/04/2016 19:43

Carbs are energy dense and generally have the most calories per gram.. which is also why high fat foods like butter are so coveted early on too i guess..

Disclaimer: May be 100% talking out of my arse there.. i have no clue ;)
