Morning Sickness Tips

This has probably been done before so apologies. I'm 8.5 weeks pregnant and have the most awful morning sickness. It started about 3 days ago and is really draining me. i had sickness in my last two pgs with DS's but this is a lot worse.
It starts from the minute i wake up til the minute i go to sleep
I constantly feel sick and can not stomach eating anything as soon as anything passes my lips i want to throw up. I'm sick 2- 3 times per day. Being sick as such doesn't bother me cos once i've been sick i feel better, but this constant nauseous feeling is really getting me down.
Its a viscious circle cos i feel worse when i don't eat but i can't eat without feeling awful. Its getting to the point i'm dreading going into the kitchen or feeling hungry. Please help.

(apologies if my suggestions make you heave)

hula hoops
haribo Sourmix
ginger & lemongrass cordial (by Bottlegreen, comes in tall green bottle, make it up like squash. Also good hot with a spoonful of honey)

atm my best cure is to eat constantly - the thought of food is awful but actual eating is fine.

Agree about little and often. As soon as I start to feel hungry the nausea takes over. Every 2 hours is a good guide I think.

I also ate constantly. This led to people rolling their eyes when I complained about my morning sickness because I was quite clearly chubbier than pre-pregnancy, and didn't always announce 'I have just thrown up in your bathroom' after I had, because I thought it wouldn't be something people wanted to hear.

MrsBadger - Haribo & Hula Hoops make me heave and it's nearly 12 years since I was last pg!

Surfermum · 08/01/2007 21:03

Nothing but nothing helped me, but I ate a lot of iced doughnuts as they tasted Ok on the way up as well as on the way down.

I avoided orange juice as it was the pits coming back up and baked beans were avoided as they stuck in my throat.

Things improved for me around 13 weeks too, although I was still sick every morning. Strangely I too ate loads of fizzy haribo and boiled sweets, and I had to keep eating regularly otherwise I was sick.

hoohoo · 08/01/2007 21:10

i must admit i'm thinking when i'm eating well this be really bad coming back up

"I ate a lot of iced doughnuts as they tasted Ok on the way up as well as on the way down. "

TMI follows.

This is a very good way of dealing with it. I remember once I believed eating cheese and mango slices relieved it (I was slightly crazed with the sickness at the time and tried new things every day) and it was the worst puke ever. The cheese came up in painful completely undigested lumps that stuck in my oesophagus all the way down, and right at the top of it. Even if you chew raw cheese properly it just remoulds into undigestible lumps, and it actually hurts throwing it up.

Peppermints apparently good. Have had a cereal bar, 2 slices of toast and a bowl of lentil soup so far today. Feeling icky

Did some research on this during my last pregnancy. Apparently morning sickness is caused by an excess of saliva in your mouth. So you should eat thinks that are salty or sour to get rid of the excess saliva - such as salt and vinegar crisps, old style still lemonade etc.

Failing that you can try thinks like crackers to soak up the excess saliva.

PeachyClair · 09/01/2007 15:07

have a look on hre for tips (menu on the left, self help tips); a really comprehensive, effective list

good luck

PeachyClair · 09/01/2007 15:07

)oh and some research suggest that morning sickness also linked to tiredness so rest, rest rest)

Skribble · 09/01/2007 15:10

I had a box of cream crackers in the car.

3rdTriMossTer · 09/01/2007 15:16

I tried everything. I got so fed up with people saying "oh you're not using ginger in the right form you should use crystaline / biscuits / tea / whatever"!

There were only two things that helped me.

  1. Making sure I got rest. It didn't make it better exactly, but it was so much worse when I was tired out.

  2. Cleaning my teeth of a morning before I had breakfast. (Tmi coming up.) Cleaning my teeth was a real trigger for throwing up for me. If I waited until I'd eaten, my breakfast would be down the loo. If I did it beforehand my stomach was empty so I couldn't physically vomit. A quick swill round with mouthwash after breakfast and I was fine.

clairemow · 10/01/2007 16:35

On teeth cleaning, I just couldn't do it at all... See toothbrush, start salivating... Still, had a check up at 8 months when I knew I wasn't going to chuck up over the dentist the moment she put something in my mouth and she said "oh your teeth are great, you must have a great dental hygiene routine". Hahahahah, like no dental hygiene routine at all for 5 months...

Sorry, wavered off the point somewhat.

bumperlicious · 12/01/2007 12:31

Ditto on the sour haribos! Get sour strawbs if you can! Plus the only thing I could stomach in the morning was coco pops!

pinkranger · 12/01/2007 13:35

oh - harriboos defently taken the edge off!

grouchyoscar · 12/01/2007 13:48

Apologies if mentioned before but I found Foxes Stem Ginger cookies a great help for the queasy moments

marymillington · 12/01/2007 13:48

poor you. i've vomited spectacularly (occasionally in public ) and for months throughout both my pregnancies, and my survival tips are:

-your husband must bring you a bowl of rice krispies in bed within 5 minutes of your waking, without having to be asked or reminded.
-don't drink a cup of tea - or anything in fact - until you have eaten

  • pear drops and murray mints share some of the same qualities as sour haribo. jellybelly jelly beans are also good.
  • do not do any cooking yourself.

Just came across NHS Best Treatments advice on morning sickness - might help.

My advice - keep on nibbling bland carbohydrates - rice cakes/toast/crackers.
