pain relief - please help!

So, for the second time this pregnancy, I have a dental abscess caused by the movement of an unerupted wisdom tooth.

I've got antibiotics which worked a treat last time. Until they start working, I'm in horrendous pain and paracetamol isn't touching it. Of course, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs are off-limits.

Any bright ideas?

Co codamol is safe in pregnancy.

I think clove oil is ok to use if you have some?

Pharmacies sell the 8/500 (8mg codeine, 500mg paracetamol) ones.
May not see them to you (being awkward) if youre very obviously pregnant, even though they are available on prescription.

Clove oil will numb the area if you spread a little on the problem tooth. I think it's safe but best to double check. It tastes vile but it does work and can be used as required.

I'd heard about clove oil but as the problem tooth is unerupted I don't think that will work

Can you ask your dentist, or a GP to prescribe you stronger pain relief? My GP gave me a prescription for codeine tablets when I had severe back pain earlier in pregnancy. I ended up not needing them at all as physio helped so much, but the GP did say they're perfectly safe to take if needed,, so there are definitely options available on prescription if you need them.

Co-codamol and new antibiotics are in order for you. Any chance of getting a urgent root canal?

Finally feeling better. Pain is manageable now and the antibiotics are kicking in. The dentist said there's nothing wrong with my tooth, so no filling or root canal necessary.

I'll look into getting stronger painkillers if it gets worse again.

So glad to hear you're feeling better, toothache/mouth pain is miserable at the best of times never mind when pregnant. I do think clove oil would help though (for future ref tho hopefully it wont be needed now!), as it works by numbing the the area (in fact it's an active ingredient in the teething gel I recently picked up for DD)
