Hyperemesis Gravidarum - Have treatment options improved in the last decade?

My son is now 11 years old and I am tentatively considering a second child but it's highly likely I will experience hyperemesis again and the thought fills me with dread.

Last time around it was a roundabout of stays in the hospital being rehydrated and given non oral anti sickness meds. I'd then be sent home with oral meds and start the cycle all over again. Absolutely horrible and I also experienced a mixed response in terms of medics - some very nice and others actually quite horrid and ignorant.

I'm really hoping that there are maybe more medication options and awareness now???

Awareness is increasing and care is improving, but best thing to do is have a pre emptive care plan, agreed with your doctor. Google Pregnancy Sickness Support and read their up to date protocol that has been designed with HG specialists and sufferers. Also jump on the mumsnet hyperemesis support thread - lovely ladies, v supportive.

I'm 11 weeks with DC2, it's taken almost 5 years to go for it again and it is horrendous, but proactive medication BEFORE I got very sick has helped me cope. Only 2 admissions so far!

Get EVERYONE you know on side, plan for help with housework, childcare etc. I've found this strategy has helped as well as the meds.

Yes I will definitely be thinking ahead if I do plan another, there was some info on taking certain meds BEFORE helping to reduce the sickness so I will definitely be looking into that.

Just to add, I had HG with my first some 12 years ago and my second pregnancy was nowhere near as bad, in fact no admissions at all! Totally unexpected.

I only have one child but I haven't only had one pregnancy, and the other I had HG too. My mum had 4 HG pregnancies (3 dcs), and my nana too had 3 HG pregnancies.

Yikes, it definitely runs in the family then. Wishing you luck....

I didn't / don't suffer from this thankfully, did get dreadful 'normal' sickness and that was bad so can't imagine how HG must be! My friend is 13 weeks and is suffering from HG and although it is terrible for her (3 admissions) she has said the hospital and her GP have been wonderful and her work also very understanding. She is seen right away no messing about when she's unwell. It's her first so she didn't expect it - no meds in advance. I think since the duchess suffered from it there's a lot more awareness.
