Which sling would you recommend?

I'm due in July. Prev. I have used a Baby Bjorn but it has given way after 3 babies. TBH it was ok but I found the babies got too hot in it in the summer because they were carried so close and it was q. thick. Also, because I seem to have mammoth babies I found it uncomfortable to wear when they got to 3 months. I'm looking for stg I can put baby in and out of easily and which baby won't get overheated in in the summer months. Also stg supportive for the baby and that won't give me terrible shoulder ache after 5 mins!. It's my 4th and I have 3 q. small ones so I'm hoping to use it lots instead of a double buggy. Would love to hear what you think.

my friend used a sling that didnt go on the front like a normal one, it sort of laid across you, but converts when they are bigger. its got ties instead of buckles and i think (not sure though) that you can wear it on your back too, when theyre even bigger. its a velvety/cordy material.

sorry i cant remember the name

double buggies IMO are a nightmare!

giulia68 · 05/01/2007 13:25

the wilkinet!!! it's brlliant. super light weight - very soft, very safe, choice of good colours and my son loved it - after we gave up with the baby bjorn because it seemed to slice him in two! don't know where you buy there from - look online, designed by a mum too which made me love it all the more. good luck finding one.

scorpio1 · 05/01/2007 13:26

is that the one i meant?!! i have brain like a sieve

my friend got a beautiful dark purple colour

SoupDragon · 05/01/2007 13:35

Absolutely positively a Kimmer pouch sling. Idiot proof. Nothing to tie, buckle or faff about with just out on and go. It doubles as a blanket and with practise you can put your baby straight into the carseat/cot in it and wiggle yourself out without disturbing him. For the winter months, a fleece Coorie from the same site is fabulous. I carry BabyDragon in it every day on the school run and she's now 11 months (and I have back problems but this sling does not aggravate them)

If you can sew you can make a fleece Coorie in about 10 minutes!

3andnomore · 05/01/2007 13:35

Moby Wrap/Hugabub...they are wraps, but stretchy, and easier to learn and more forgiving and you have lots of ways to carry them.....for the hotter month, just dress baby really lightly and they shouldn't be to hot!

CorrieDale · 05/01/2007 13:36

Soupy, can you bf in the Kimmer, do you know? It looks lovely...

SoupDragon · 05/01/2007 13:39

Yes, I have bf with the Kimmer when DD wasabout 4 months old (I've got a "stretch Kimmer"). There's a bit of rummaging required to get get them latched on IIRC but once they're on it's hands free.

CorrieDale · 05/01/2007 13:47

sounds good! I seem to recall you recommended the Windowsox too...

earthtomummy · 05/01/2007 13:49

Wow. Just checked out the Kimmer website - thanks Supdragon - and am bamboozled! They look so diff. to what I've used before but I'm thinking it looks good. Soupdragon, does it support their heads - they don't sort of slup uncomfortably whilst they are tiny babes? It sounds promising that you do the school run everyday with an 11mo. I have a bad back and SPD which is always a probl;em after the birth.

Oh sorry I forgot to ask - this is going to sound so stupid...but..if I'm bending down to do stg with another child like at a playground, or put stuff in the buggy basket etc, is the baby totally safe from falling out. I know it's a silly thought but because they are so strapped in in the baby bjorn I just have a vision of little one popping out of the sling!? I'm sure it's not the case but...reassure me!

I don't think I'd lean forward with a baby in one without having a supporting hand on them but if you bend down at the knees, they're fine. When they're little they're all tucked up in it like a hammock so they're completely supported - they lie across your body rather than the more usual strapped upright on your chest position. when they have more neck control you can sit them up facing you and when they're bigger, they kind of sit on it like a seat at your hip.

They look all lovely in there as newborns... sigh.

I made my fleece one because I did not for one second think it would work and didn't want to waste money on one! I've since made 2 for Mumsnetters with nightmare babies out of an Ikea fleece throw...

SoupDragon · 05/01/2007 14:08

If you look here the baby has its bottom where the seam is and there's the same amount of fabric between it and you as you can see at the front. Obviously with a fleece one this makes them quite warm so the cotton pouches/kimmers would be better for summer.

trixymalixy · 05/01/2007 16:07

I bought a wilkinet on ebay for £15. i didn't want to spend the £50 ish that they are new as I didn't know how often I'd use it.

can't comment on how good it is yet tho!

marymillington · 05/01/2007 16:35

soupy, those look really good

when you are out and about though, in the winter do you wear them over or under your coat and stuff?

redtent · 05/01/2007 16:49

you could wear them over or under- and just dress approprately and don't overheat baby!!

I saw someone in the metro centre with a baby in a snowsuit in a fleece pouch- I was hot in just a jumper and tshirt!!

Otherwise you can make yourself a double layered fleece poncho and cut a slot in it for baby to pop out of.... or buy an expensive babywearing coat if you think you might use a sling a lot of the time.

pouches are great btw.... and Laura at brightsparks is really very very helpful.

redtent · 05/01/2007 16:51

clarifying that if you wear over it will stretch out (a wash should bring it back).... and maybe be baggy when you then wear it under... some people would need a size bigger to wear over a coat.

expatinscotland · 05/01/2007 16:53

Deffo the Coorie for winter and hte Kimmer for summer.

DD2 was always in her Coorie. She was a December baby.

Got lots of compliments and she was a wee snugglebug who liked to be close to you.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2007 17:46

I've always worn it over my coat and wrapped DD appropriately. it's lovely - like having your own personal hot water bottle! She was fine int he Kimmer in Antigua this summer at 6 months old so it should be fine for the UK.
