Safe to fly at 12 weeks?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice. For various reasons we are rather unexpectedly taking 2 weeks holiday next weekend. The day we plan to fly I will be 11 +6/12 weeks pregnant. It's a 12 hour flight and so far ( touch wood) this has been a trouble free pregnancy ( my second.) I have heard though that you shouldn't fly at various points during pregnancy... any thoughts out there?

it is safe at this point , i beleive. it is the final trimester you are supposed to avoid air travel

make sure you wear flight socks, and get up and move frequently and drink lots of water !

hatwoman · 04/01/2007 18:46

it's only in late pg that you shouldn;t fly. look here

welcome keeps me out of mischief anyway ! have a good holiday !

clairemow · 04/01/2007 19:15

to add to what Lulu has said, when I was 16 weeks pregnant we flew to New Zealand - v. long flights from Heathrow! No problems at all, although I did avoid the prawns on the Heathrow to Singapore part! I think a holiday will be great at this part of pregnancy - take your mind off feeling sick!! Have a lovely time.

i flew when i was 14 weeks, and found that i needed to drink more water than normal.

i also took some small snacks with me so my blood sugar level wouldnt drop and make me dizzy/pukey!

have a nice trip

Hi. I looked into this a lot, as for some reason, once I got pg, I decided we had to experience Vegas before the baby was born and the times we could go were an issue due to work commitments.
General consesus was that up to 32 weeks it was fine, just make sure to keep mobile, drink plenty of water etc.
We ended up flying to Vegas when I was 29 weeks with no problems at all. Best part of the pregnancy! Enjoy your holiday!

giulia68 · 05/01/2007 20:30

scorpio and littlestar, thanks a lot. i think we are going to go - checked it out with a doctor friend and my gp as well as the wonderful mnetters. the contraindication seems to be that if you have had bleeding or a previous miscarriage you shouldn't fly in the first 12 weeks. then clearly, each airline has its rules for the maximum number of weeks you can fly up until..

so, i will be taking plenty of water, plenty of snacks and an aspirin the day before and after. oh, and the special socks... and my DP and my D Mum to look after my DS ( 18 mos) on the twelve hour flight ( giulia goes white with fear..)

i flew at 12 weeks, make sure you tell the check-in/cabin crew as we got moved to a seat with extra leg room, always worth a try
enjoy your hols

Hulababy · 05/01/2007 20:35

I flew long haul at 9 weeks (and home at 11 weeks) and it was fine. TBH on the plane in the air was the only place I didn't suffer from sickness in those first 4 months!

clairemow · 05/01/2007 21:03

guilia, should you be taking an aspirin in the first trimester? Sorry to add another question for you!!!

Toady · 05/01/2007 21:11

I flew from Bristol to Switzerland (so only about an hour I think) when I was 30 weeks pregnant, I was quite big so was asked how many weeks I was, apparantly 36 weeks were the cut off point.

My midwife also advised me to take my maternity notes with me.

giulia68 · 09/01/2007 23:00

clairemow, sorry to take an age to get back to you... i will check about the aspirin. it was suggested by a consultant obs friend rather than my gp but i will check when i see my gp this week. i will let you know what they say in case anyone else is interested in knowing. take care.

I was on holidays in the US when I found out I was pregnant - so didn't have any choice but to fly back - echo what has been said so far about it being the last trimester that is a problem

estobi1 · 10/01/2007 23:10

I flew to US and internally at 36 weeks and I was absolutely fine. All of the airlines have policies about flying whilst pg so the best thing to do is check it out with them and your insurers as they will not let you fly if there is any risk. I got a letter from my GP saying I was fit to fly but I don't think you need that until the later stages. Good luck and have a great holiday

Hersetta · 11/01/2007 10:25

I am 8 weeks tomorrow with our first and have already flown quite a lot with no problems whatsoever.

The baby was actually conceived during a weekend in New York so I had that flight home. I then found out I was pregnant the day before we went on holiday to the Dominican republic for Xmas - back 2 days and then flew to Spain to see my Mum.

I'm flying to Chicago on business for 2 days on Monday - but luckily that is in business class so hopefully I'll have lots of room to wander around.
