When should I go on maternity leave?

I'm due 27th March (with my first).

  • I work a 48 hour week (contracted hours; they like you to work more and you have to sign the opt-out), and my commute takes over an hour each way (35 min train then walk either end; I can't drive).

  • The company does not let people work from home for fear of theft of information so that's out.

I have already been told that the job I do cannot be done part-time: if they did let me reduce my hours, it would mean me doing a more junior role. Although having said that I'm not that* bothered about that, unless it's more junior pay as well!

  • I doubt they will let me reduce my hours - long story so I won't bore you, but basically our financial year has changed and it's meant extra work.

  • I have previously said I'll go off at the end of February, but I'm exhausted. Dh and mil are really worried about me. And I'm not doing my job properly if I'm being honest, just don't have the energy.

  • I'm going to ask to reduce my hours come February in a meeting which was next Wednesday but is now at two o'clock!!

If they say no, do you think I should go off sooner? Dh thinks we can afford for me to go off from the end of Jan. How long have others left it before their EDD before going off? Nearly two months does seem excessive to me, it's not like I have complications or anything.

(Oh I work in an office, sat down.)

thank you lucyjones...will order it now ! x

Thank you all very much.

I'm going to tell him I want to stop doing the late nights in February.

If he says no, or if he says "well how about working until seven o'clock?" then I'm going to ask him if I can think about it and then come back in and tell him I'm taking my leave sooner.

Possibly have my two weeks' holiday middle of February and then start maternity in March.

I get ten days off sick at full pay, then the rest is SMP; not sure how much SMP is and also if I have to apply for it or whether it gets paid through the employer.

If you are an employee then the employer pays your SMP

3rdTriMossTer · 04/01/2007 13:52

Sorry meant SSP, stat sick pay, not SMP.

Moss, only just seen this - do NOT go into that meeting on your own, postpone it if necessary until at least tomorrow and take a representative with you, it's your right. Don't be forced into making any rushed decisions - what reason have they given for bringing forward the meeting? It sounds unreasonable to me and could be classed as harrassment - illegal at any time, but doubly so in pregnancy.

TheBlonde · 04/01/2007 13:53

Ah they pay that too

3rdTriMossTer · 04/01/2007 13:58

Callie I don't have a representative!

It is only an "informal" meeting, I had asked for it to be next Wednesday but Darth Vader had a slot free in his busy schedule so thought, why not do it now?

I'm going to stick to my guns. No lates in Feb or I'm off. Wish me luck!!!!

I am so proud of myself! I went in there and said exactly what I needed.

Thank you all very much for all your help.

I am no longer going to be targeted for ridiculously high billings and my job will change to more of a support role. This will reduce my stress levels enormously.

BUT I will be able to keep the same salary! They are even going to look into giving me a different kind of target so I can still earn some commission!

AND... in February I won't have to do the late nights, which is the main thing. And my salary will stay the same.

Darth Vader just has to run it by the Emperor and get a formal job spec written up and I have been promised this by next week!

Again thank you all for your help and giving me the confidence boost I needed to go in there and say what I thought.

Just a note. If anyone else ever finds herself in this situation try this:

Big Princess-Di style eyes: "I really wouldn't want to go off sick and let everyone down but if I continue to work these hours and in this stressful role I could see it happening and it would be such a shame..."

Boobooroastingonanopenfire · 04/01/2007 16:01

Only just seen this MsMoss.

You are an inspiration!

trixymalixy · 04/01/2007 23:18

Go girl!!

I worked up to 36 weeks and was absolutely exhausted and ended up being on complete bed rest for a week basically through overdoing things.

Your health is the most important thing!

3rdTriMossTer · 05/01/2007 15:41

Well I get my new job spec in writing on Monday, but Darth Vader went through it with me today.

It looks a lot less stressful and I have only three more late nights to work. They've put in a provision for me to earn a small bonus as well.

So roll on Monday that's what I say!

Again thanks to everyone for the help and confidence!
