Mistaken boy bits

I'm just wondering if when you get to 36/37 weeks it is easily possible to mistake the umbilical cord for boy bits? We haven't found out all along as we don't mind whether the baby is a boy/girl. However yesterday at an unexpected scan I thought I saw little boys bits and I'm a little disappointed that we might have got to such a late stage and so close to delivery and accidentally seen baby's gender. Certainly don't mind if it is a boy. Just really wanted to make it to birth before finding out.

I think it can be quite tricky to tell the difference unless you known what to look for. I've had one of each and they pointed it out to us but even then was tricky!

Don't they normally have to do a proper between the legs shot to determine the sex? Plus things are a lot more cramped in there by 36w- so if it makes you feel better assume it could have been anything or just shadows

Yes! Definitely. Based on a 38 week scan (no 5 pregnancy) I was sure I was having a boy. Had seen loads of scans where midwife was careful to avoid the area. Had a scan by a doctor as fluid levels very low - there was absolutely, without doubt a willy! I was so disappointed as I really did not want to know the sex. Told no one I knew.
During the c section when DH given baby to unwrap, he proudly announced "it's a girl"! Cue massive debate were I insisted baby was checked by midwifed as obviously, even after 4 other babies, DH had no idea! Midwife confined a gorgeous baby girl (and the fact even after years of scans it is so easy to mix up a willy and an umbilical cord).

Oh that's reallyreassuring. We likely only have a week or two until delivery so it would be a shame to find out now.

It was the testicles on my late scan that have the game away!

Size wise the willy is a LOT smaller than the cord. The cord is nearer the size of a thigh than a willy.
I think you are safe not knowing still!!

I had a LOT of scans due to a failing placenta. We didn't want to find out the sex but both thought we saw boy bits. I had a girl.

I think I'm safe to assume we still don't know then regardless of what I saw. Don't think I could honestly say I saw testicles. Not long now until we know for real.

I had to have another scan 3 weeks after my 20w one as baby was scrunched up so they couldn't get a good view of it's back.
At that scan I convinced myself I could see boys bits & told DP as well. 17 weeks later I gave birth to DD

We had to have lots of extra scans and DH began to fancy himself a bit of an expert and was convinced he'd seen boy bits. Turned out to be a girl. I think to an untrained eye it's very hard to tell.

It really does sound like its hard to tell! Chances are I didn't see anything of the sort.

DH ALWAYS thinks he's seen boy bits. So far it has been the cord every time!
