Hyperemesis and being overweight: is there a link?

When i got PG with DD1 i was about 1 stone overweight and with DD2 about 1.5 stone ok maybe a bit more overweight. i have read somewhere that there is a link between the 2.

So one of the BIG things that puts me off having a 3rd is being that ill again.

so what i want to know is if i lose all my excess weight, which i need to anyway, will i still get the HE next time?

I had a BMI of 22.5 when I got pregnant, and had terrible MS for 5 months. Same as my Mum.

Obviously that's jus me, but the weight link doesn't sound very likely...

I think there are loads of correlations, weight being only one of them (along with age, diet, smoking, whether it's a new partner, etc etc). They don't understand much about the causes so they can only say that you are more likely to get it if you fall into a certain category, not that being in that category causes it IYKWIM.
I think you have about a two thirds chance of getting it again if you've had it once - losing the weight might help (I don't know much about that one) but it certainly wouldn't be a surefire way of preventing it.

thanks for that.

i don't smoke, or drink really, my mum had it, i've had it twice now, so i guess its reasonably certain i will get it again.

what about the sex of the baby, both mine were girls maybe a boy won't give me HE?

Lots of info on www.hyperemesis.org.uk/ (if you don't already know about it).

I had it twice but it wasn't as bad the second time and I got the drugs earlier, which helped.

Good luck.

Not for me - slim-ish (size 12-14), shocking HG in both pgs.

I think its down to how you react to the hormone surges.

KathyMCMLXXII · 03/01/2007 14:43

Oh - and the smoking connection was that if you smoke you are less likely to get it!

mine was worse second time until i got the drugs and they worked, but i then slept for 12-14 hours a day!!

I had it with my dd for five months when I conceived in October 2005. Have just started ttc again and am worried I'll have it again but a chance we've got to take.

I've not heard that your weight can be a factor but have heard that a high in fat diet can make it worse so I suppose that is kind of saying your weight could be a factor, if that makes sense?

I've read that a healthy diet can help. I'm bigger than my pre-pregnancy weight so hoping that doesn't make me worse next time!

Piffle · 03/01/2007 15:49

I had hyperemesis with dd I was very slim.
Am heavier this time by about a stone (still bmi ok) and have had no sickness
2 boys one girl - only sick with dd
Hmmmm -

katzg · 03/01/2007 15:52

oh piffle - that sounds interesting - now if only there was a sure fire way to concieve a boy!

Everyone told me I must be having a girl and I did. Wonder if it can be worse when carrying a girl!?

Boobooroastingonanopenfire · 03/01/2007 15:54

Sorry, but I'm carrying a boy, and was sick, sick, sick.

(Glad to hear your blue news btw, Piffle).

Piffle · 03/01/2007 16:06

I know there is no logic to it
am just bloody glad I escaped this time round was dreading the sickness had got almost every avilable concoction, old wives tale and alleged remedy on hand only for nothign to materialise.
