low placenta

Had my 20 week scan and they have noticed I have a low placenta, the scan lady explained but I just wondered if this is common, anyone out there had the same thing etc?

I do! Got my scan next week at 36 weeks to see if it's moved. 90% do so I'm not worried. Did she say if it was covering or just low?

I had a low lying placenta with my second baby. As long as the placenta isn't covering the cervix at this point in 99% of cases it will move up out of the way as your uterus expands. I had an extra scan at 34 weeks to check but all was fine.

yep i've got my next scan at 32 weeks and then at 36 if it hasn't moved. i think it has though as feeling a lot more from baby lately

And if it is covering the cervix what happens?

Not uncommon at all (I'm a midwife) and more than likely will have resolved by 34 weeks.

Hello! I had this & mine didn't move out of the way so I had a section. It was great! So don't worry too much about the idea of having to have one.

Alice depends on degree but if totally covering cervix will mean a c section.

Usually if it's covering the cervix it won't move much at all and will block exit so would mean a c section

Very common at 20 wk scan and over 90% of them move, well they don't move as such but as your uterus grows the placenta is moved up away from your cervix. I had this at my 20wk scan and then by 29wks when I had another scan it had moved. They checked how far away it was and it was well over 8cm? Away from cervix
Apparently most have moved by 34-36wks.

If it doesn't move and depending on degree it means baby will need to be born by elective c section but the majority do move :)

Mines covering cervix and medical professionals are very hopeful for it to move so don't panic :)
