OK, this is going to sound really daft, but don't want to spend a small fortune on a maternity bikini if, actually, a normal one will do fine.

Didn't have this dilemma when pg with DD as she was a Jan baby, so did not really have much of a bump in the summer, but am due in July and desperately need a new cossie anyway, but am hoping I can just get away with a fairly cheapo normal bikini in a larger size?

Are any cuts better than others to fit over/under a bump? - I would prefer something on the generous side (i.e. not string) as my arse seems to be expanding far quicker than my bump at the mo.

Ta in advance for any thoughts on this

I kept wearing my normal tankini-style one (generous knickers and vest-style top) and it was fine. The vest rode up over the bump towards the end but not in a bad way. It's from Next, cost £16 I think.

Bodkin · 03/01/2007 12:12

Thanks for that - any other recommendations from anyone?

i was still able to wear normal bikini ( from John Lewis i think) when I was 6/7 months for holiday in greece
have fun!

M&S used to do mixed sizes for this and I got a great tankini that was a smaller size on the bottom than the top for this.

Come to think of it tankinis are good because they are vest-shaped, not an underwired bra - so can comfortably accomodate your massive preganancy bazoomas.

I bought a tankini from Tesco. 4 pounds fot the top and 3 for the short style bottoms, IIRC

Did me all the way through, and is still fine now (almst 6 months post baby)

I just got a lovely maternity swimsuit delivered today. Got it in the Blooming Marvellous sale: reduced to £12.

There's no way a normal swimsuit would go around me. I'm 7 months, and the size of a house.

It's hard to predict which way you'll go at this stage!

Bodkin · 03/01/2007 16:24

Was looking at that very maternity cossie you mention yesterday booboo and thought it was very nice and a bargain, but the thing is, we're off to Centerparcs in 2 weeks, so I need something that I can also wear now (not much of a bump yet) and I am guessing it might look a bit odd if no bump to fill the cossie?

Like the sound of the £4 Tesco number though

...nips back from Tesco site aghast that they don't do clothes on-line...

Oh dear that's a shame. Also I think they may only have had them in store late spring onwards, but still worth a look

eidsvold · 04/01/2007 01:25

i have a tankini top and boardshorts in a larger size to cover bump. It is summer here and I am due in Mar. Dd2 and I do mother and toddler swimming classes every week. I also have a normal one piece that I wear with the boardshorts as well and it is still fitting/stretching so far at 28 weeks.

I also bought a tankini style maternity swimmers only cause they were cheap.... so can alternate between both sets iyswim.

tankini should be fine, esp if you get one with a shorter top.

Come to think of it, what size are you? I have a size 12 maternity costume from Mothercare that I could send you if you like, for free! It's black with purple edging, not very high cut round the leg though, so depends what you're after.

Have to admit I PMSL at the thought of a heavily pregnant woman in a string bikini...

Bodkin · 04/01/2007 21:08

Aw, that's a very kind offer Clairemow - I would pay your postage of course! How do we go about arranging that? Shall I email you my address?

Think I'll also buy a cheapo tankini to wear for now until bump gets tooooooo big.

Thanks for all your help, I knew I could rely on Mumsnet for assistance with my (fairly trivial) swimsuit dilemmas!

Oh this is being annoying and not posting. Expect it'll come up 3 times now.....

sorry Bodkin, haven't got on today until now. You can email me at [email protected], and I'll send it to you. Don't worry about postage, sure it won't be much!!

Bodkin · 05/01/2007 21:57

Will do it now. You're a star!

it's on its way! Enjoy!

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2007 13:11

I think tankinis are soooo cute on pregnant women. With my stretch marks I won't ever be showing off my tummy again ever, but I think tankinis are the way to go if you can get away with it.

Bodkin · 08/01/2007 15:59

Thanks for that Claire, I'll look out for it. Just tried looking for a tankini as well, to see me through the next couple of months - not one to be found in the whole of my town! Will have to get one on-line and hope that it covers my mahoosive rear...

Claire, just got it today. It looks perfect. Thanks so much for that and for taking the time to send it - I know how hard it is to get out the house when you've got little ones!

By the way, love your son's name - mind if I add it to my list of possibles?!!

xxx

hi Bodkin - of course add his name to your list!!

Glad you like the cossie, have fun in the pool!
