Things you've learned about nausea and vomiting

Let's make a list of handy hints and things you've realised, partly for fun but hopefully we can help each other!

I'll start:

Today I realised that using a dog (poo) bag as my portable sick bag is insufficient both in size of the hole to aim into and volume it holds! Throwing up into such a small bag while driving to work without it going all over my clothes is HARD. I'm going to have to move on to a bigger size bag from now on. Grin

Despite what I first thought, it IS possible to learn to hold it in (most of the time) until reaching a toilet in work. They still haven't figured me out.

At least half the time I think I need to throw up, I just needed a big (sicky) burp type thing, and am learning to distinguish between the two feelings.

Juicy fruit is lovely and refreshing after a good vomit. Nectarines, plums, grapes, etc help - for about 5 minutes anyway.

Isn't pregnancy glorious?

GINGER DOES NOT WORK

in fact even thinking about ginger ale 2 years later makes me feel ill

MrSlant · 01/03/2016 21:56

Drink ribena (full sugar version) first thing, you know you are going to be sick, we know you are going to be sick, if you have lovely sweet ribena it doesn't have to be bile-ey and horrible, it can be sweet and not unlike the drink it was going down. Combination of 16 months total vomiting daily knowledge for you there (DS3 was a bastard, vomited until the day I gave birth. Totally worth it.)

MrSlant · 01/03/2016 22:00

Vomiting like it's never going to stop whilst your eyes stream and wee comes out then you get a nose bleed is never going to be a good start to the day Grin. 8 months pregnant, something went tits up with my hormones the whole pregnancy. Too little of something and too much of something else before anyone in early pregnancy thinks this is normal. It was NOT normal.

This is great, I held the most perfect newborn today and actually felt a bit hormonally 'now or never old lady'. Remembering why not now.

Haha oh yes I forgot about the fact that I've had to start making the decision between peeing first, risking being sick mid-pee, or being sick first with a bit of pee coming out. Pee first! See my first post - you can learn to hold in the sick a few seconds longer!

I really hope this doesn't go beyond 3 months let alone 8!

Love the Ribena idea!

Ikea do packs of resealable sandwich/freezer bags, one of which is massive, holds sick in very well on car journey's :)

malin100 · 01/03/2016 22:31

I like the idea although not likely to be in an IKEA for a few months at least. I had considered the tie up freezer bags I have in the house which are big but the see-throughness was putting me off!

It is possible to vomit into a large sandwich bag while driving.

It is possible to vomit gas so forcefully it hurts.

Neither full fat milk or rice is a pleasant thing to bring back up.

I am not pregnant but I do remember just going with it in the end. I'd eat whatever and chuck it up. I agree milk was horrible, though!!!

FastWindow · 01/03/2016 22:56

Im an emetophobe and owe somebody some eyeteeth for sparing me that horror. Both pgs. Yes , i know im blessed. Just let me know where to send the teeth. You can have em gladly.

honeysucklejasmine · 01/03/2016 23:02

The orange Sainsburys bags are very suitable as vomit catchers. No holes in the bottom.

Invest some money in tena lady. As your pregnancy continues, making the choice to pee first may not be possible.

If you can maintain vomiting all the way through your pregnancy and labour, you will get assigned a private room on post natal ward, as they will think you are sick. Wink

amysmummy12345 · 01/03/2016 23:02

Not exactly a tip, but I've learned I piss myself every time I heave and vomit... Tena ladies are a second time round pregnancy must!!!

Also the juice from tinned peaches are good for getting ketones to reduce in urine 😁

Elledouble · 01/03/2016 23:07

Eat something. If you can. It took me a surprisingly long time to work out that I was sickest when I hadn't eaten, and obviously throwing up yellow bile is horrible. Nibbling a little bit (oatcakes, salty snacks, that sort of thing) through the day helped stave it off quite well. Once I'd got a handle on that I was really only sick when I first got up in the morning and sometimes when I'd had a long drive home from work.

FastWindow · 01/03/2016 23:15

I DO have a tip. I did feel nauseous during pg. But i never got out of bed till dh had brought me tea and toast, that saved me.

Also eating every 2 hours. Religiously. Whatever was to hand, nuts, crisps, fruit, sandwiches. 2 hours. That also worked beautifully. Wonder if its a blood sugar /vom thing.

butterflylove16 · 01/03/2016 23:24

I learnt (not to discourage anyone, just my own personal experience), that absolutely nothing helped my sickness! Eating little and often? No. Starting the day with a few biscuits or something before I got out of bed? No. Ginger biscuits? No. Eating cold food rather than cooking? No. Eating bland food? No. Changing my eating schedule? No. Not drinking while eating? No. Taking my folic acid at different times to see if that helps? No. I think I tried just about every piece of advice I was given, but just had to ride it out and by 16 weeks it started to get better Smile it will have all been worth it though!
