Hi,

Im thinking of going for a 4d bonding scan,I will be 31 weeks tomorrow.
My problem is that I have a routine 32 week scan at the hospital on 9th Jan.
Does anybody know if it would be harmful to have 2 scans so close together?
What would you do?
Thanks

In my last pregnancy I was part of a university research study and so I often used to have the NHS scans followed on the same day or a week later by 4d scans in the university research centre.

At 34 weeks I had a 4d scan so they could measure growth etc. So all in all I had many scans throughout pregnancy (often within days of each other) and my DS is lovely.

Personally as I am a bit paranoid I found it very reassuring.

I had a 4D scan with ds2 and loved it!

A friend's daughter was pg while in a residency program and popped into radiology for a scan ver frequently so I would think it should be fine.

Not to clued up about side affect iykwim BUT with dd I was scanned (due to previous mc's) at 6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,21 and 3d/4d scan at 28 weeks. DD is a healthy gorgeous lively toddler..!!!

This time I have scanned at 6,12 and 20 weeks with a 3d/4d scan at 28 weeks...ds2b is due in 5 weeks time.

Its your choice at the end of the day...BTW the sonographer we had for the 3d/4d scan had also scanned his 3 dc and he was a top sonographer at a local hospital..I thought: well if he does it then why not..??!!

BTW if you decide to do it get a wriggle on as I was advised the best time was around 28 weeks..This way all of baby can be seen and there is enough room to get clear and good pixs. I wouldn't leave it much longer imo.

Good luck. xx

I had a 4d scan a few weeks ago. Have to admit I was a tad disappointed, it wasn't as clear as the photos on the clinic's publicity shots (the image was fuzzier than I thought it would be) and the baby was in a poor position, we only saw her face briefly for a few minutes at the end. Still enjoyed it though and would do it again but with more realistic expectations!

There is a suggestion of too many scans being linked to attention-deficit, although I have never read any papers on it. I would be happy to have two scans close together, but a bit unsure of having loads.

How much do 3d/4d scans cost? Can you get them for free or do you have to pay?

I had a 4D scan in May 2005 and it cost £195. We got photo's and a dvd. Prices may have come down now and probably vary depending on your area. I was 31 weeks when I had my scan, they recommended between 30 and 32 weeks. We could see dd clearly and luckily she was laying in a good position.

dd's in feb 2005 was 195 quidandwe travelled to leeds as no where local but this time with ds2b we went to manchester and it was 195 quid`again but through bounty we got a 20 quid discount. TBH apart from the discount prices haven't decreased for us...

I think if for medical reasons you can get on nhs otherwise you have to pay.

Ours had a sliding scale of prices depending on which photo package you went with. Cheapest was about £110 and most expensive £190.
